Study Abroad in Florence
Gonzaga University in Florence, Italy
Gonzaga-in-Florence, established in 1963, is a junior year, semester or summer program administered by Gonzaga University, a fully accredited four year Jesuit institution. Students are encouraged to spend the entire academic year on the program. Those students unable to spend the entire year may attend the program in either the Fall or the Spring semester. Students studying abroad in the Spring semester are encouraged to take part in the 2 week Christmas Trip so that students may meet other students already participating in the program.
The City of Florence was chosen because of its tradition as the intellectual and artistic center of both the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The libraries, museums, churches, and monuments in Florence provide today's students with unique opportunities for understanding the forces which shaped European civilization.
Designed as a junior year of foreign study, the courses offered at Gonzaga-in-Florence cover a wide range of subjects in the humanities including: art history, drawing, economics, English literature, history, beginning through advanced Italian language, philosophy, political science, sculpture, sociology, and religious studies, as well as business courses in business law, operations management, marketing and finance. An intensive Italian language program is available for Italian Studies majors. For course listings please visit their website.
Gonzaga-in-Florence is located in the heart of old Florence not far from the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Housing (with maid service) and meals are provided for students in several hotels in the area within walking distance of the school. Students are housed with other US students on the Gonzaga program.
- GPA Requirement: 3.0
- Sophomore standing at the time of application
- Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing
- The Italian language is not a requirement for acceptance into the general Florence program. However, students are strongly encouraged to study Italian before going to Florence and to continue doing so while they are there. Students who do not take Italian prior to acceptance into the program will be required to take two semesters of Italian while in Florence.
Students will remain registered at SJU and pay SJU tuition for the semester or year they will be studying abroad plus a Continuing Registration Fee of $100. Tuition rates are assessed to a student based on the student's primary matriculation at Saint Joseph's University as determined by the academic policies of the University.
Saint Joseph's University will then pay Gonzaga University for the tuition portion of the program. Students will be responsible for all non-tuition fees associated with this program.
