PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Saint Joseph's University program is offered in cooperation with the Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA), Butler University. The Institute administers programs of study abroad in Great Britain and Australia for more than 2000 American students from 150 colleges and universities. Their main website with information on Melbourne is:

http://www.ifsa-butler.org/programs/australia/melbourne/

One of the top universities in Australia, the University of Melbourne sits on a green campus in the middle of the city of Melbourne. With a dynamic student body of 31,500 and loads of social, cultural, and sports clubs, Melbourne has a lively and energetic atmosphere. The Student Union is incredibly active; check into the cultural offerings, including theatre, cinema, and art shows. The Union also schedules concerts, speakers, and other activities. The campus is about fifteen minutes from beaches in the suburbs.

Melbourne is Australia 's second largest city, located in the state of Victoria.  Students are enrolled as visiting students at the University of Melbourne and attend classes with Australian students.

ACADEMICS

SJU students are admitted to the University of Melbourne as Visiting Students.  Visiting students are admitted for a period of one semester or one year.  Please keep in mind that a Visiting student is not being admitted to a program leading to a degree, diploma or any other award from the University of Melbourne.

Melbourne is academically one of the top universities in the country and has a great selection of courses. Especially popular with study abroad students are the arts, Australian studies, business/economics, marketing/management and science departments. For more course information visit the University of Melbourne's Handbook.

The academic calendar is quite different from a semester at SJU. The majority of Australian Universities run on a semester system during a calendar year - February to November with their summer break during the months of December and January. Semester 1, (U.S. Spring), runs from February to July.  Semester 2 (U.S. Fall) takes place from July to November.  Please keep these dates in mind when applying for admission.

SJU students will need to register for 4 courses totaling at least 16 credits. Since students can only take 4 courses on this program, students are able to use the SJU 4 Course Policy. This policy allows students to either 1) have a free elective waived or 2) take an overload and not be charged for it. For a full explanation of the 4 course policy please click here.

Course Selection: Preliminary course selections are made prior to departure, but may be changed at registration once you are in Australia. It is important that you get course approval for the courses you intend to take prior to departure.

Student Services
A full range of student support services are provided by the IFSA. The IFSA's Sydney office is staffed by full-time professionals who have many years of experience in guiding and supporting U.S undergraduates studying in Australia . The Sydney staff provides administrative and academic support services for all the Australia programs and acts as liaison for the students, University of Melbourne and Saint Joseph's.  In addition, there is a regional student liaison officer, who is always available to assist students with any academic or adjustment issues.

Pre-departure Instructions and Information
To ensure that students are well-prepared for their period of study abroad, pre-departure meetings are organized each semester on campus. Students are required to attend these meetings during the semester prior to studying in Australia . In addition, IFSA-Butler sends each student a mailing, which covers transportation options, housing arrangements, the farm visit and course information. A handbook with practical information regarding financial matters, travel documents, health care, etc. is sent early in the application period to help students prepare for overseas study.

Orientation
Upon arrival in Australia, the IFSA staff conducts an orientation program, which will consist of meetings, lectures, social activities and tours to provide you with information on various aspects of life in Australia .  A short farm visit is included early in the semester program as well.

HOUSING

There are several housing options for study abroad students. You are guaranteed housing. Students can stay in residence halls which are located around the campus. All provide study-bedrooms and extensive facilities which usually include a library, study rooms, computer rooms, music rooms, recreational areas, and laundries. Most have mandatory meal plans that can accommodate special diets.

There is also an International House, home to both international and Australian students. A house owned by IFSA-Butler is also available. It is within walking distance of campus and is shared only with other IFSA-Butler (study abroad) students.

International Transportation
IFSA arranges for optional one-way air travel from the west coast to Australia.  Saint Joseph 's students enrolled in the program will receive further detailed information regarding this option. Students participating on the group flight are met upon arrival in Australia.
