Advising Timeline

Fall 2008

Academic Orientation - Tuesday September 2, 2008

  • For freshmen advisors, this is your first opportunity to meet your advisees and to begin to devleop a relationship with them. If you are unable to participate in this orientation, please schedule a meeting with your advisees during the first few weeks of school.
  • If advising incoming transfer students, you are strongly encouraged to meet with them during the first few weeks of school. It is often easy for transfer students to get lost in the transition. As with freshmen, it is important to check in with them.

Last day to add and/or drop a class - Wednesday September 10 , 2008

  • Freshmen must complete a Registration Changes Form to make adjustments to their schedule. Changes cannot be made on line through My SJU. For section changes, students do not need a signature from their faculty advisor - they may go directly to the Registrar's Office (BL 122) to request the change.  For other types of changes (e.g., math level change) the faculty advisor’s signature is required. After obtaining this signature, students deliver the completed form to the Registrar’s Office (BL 122).
  • First Semester Transfer Students can make changes with the help and guidance of their facutly advisor.  Faculty advisors may make changes to transfer student schedules via My SJU.
  • Returning upperclass students may make changes through My SJU with their PIN.  Students are strongly encouraged to talk with their advisor about substantive changes to their schedule.

HSB Advising 101 - September 22 through November 7, 2008

  • Freshmen and incoming transfer students will be notified of their meeting time via email. We ask that you not release Spring Registration PINs to freshmen unless they have completed the HSB 101 requirements. As we did last year, students will be provided a card verifying that they have completed pre-registration requirements. Although we strongly encourage transfer students to participate, it is not required.

Fall Break - October 20-21, 2008
Enjoy the break - mid-term grades are coming soon.

Mid-Term Grades - Available Monday October 27, 2008

  • Mid-term grades are due on October 22, 2008. Advisors will receive two hard copies of their advisees’ grades – one for your records and one for the student. Your advisees are asked to schedule an appointment to meet with you beginning October 27, 2008. Please provide some extra time in your scheduled office hours to accommodate all of your students.
  • For first-time advisors, the Advising Center has compiled a Guide for Reviewing Mid-Term Grades with students.

Last day to withdraw from a class - Friday November 7, 2008

  • Please check in with students who may be having difficulty prior to this deadline date and review their options with them. Prior to this deadline, students must obtain your approval as well as the Dean's Office approval to withdraw. Dean Patrick O’Brien or the Director of the Advising Center may sign the form granting Dean’s Office approval for the withdrawal from a class. After this date, students wishing to request an EXTRAORDINARY WITHDRAWAL from a course are required to obtain their professor’s approval and Dean O’Brien’s approval.

Registration for spring classes begins in early November, 2008

  • The Registrar and the HSB Advising Center will email additional information as the dates for registration approach. Again, it will be essential for you to provide some extra office hours in order to accomodate your students. Only faculty advisors may release PINs to students.
