Frequently Asked Questions
How do I qualify for the Co-op Program?
Two minimum qualifications are necessary for participation in the program. Students must maintain and overall GPA of 2.5 or higher and be enrolled in the Haub School of Business, with the exception of Food Marketing majors, who should contact the Food Marketing Cooperative Education Program.
How do I get my Co-op job?
The Co-op office will work individually with you in helping you identify your major fields of interest after which resumes are referred to companies that have positions closely aligned with those interests. Employers submit their requirements and job descriptions to the co-op office and resumes are sent to individual employers.
What are the benefits of the Co-op program?
Practical experience, technical knowledge, financial rewards, confidence and a better understanding of the world of work are all benefits of the co-op work experience. Work experience also assists graduating seniors with their job search. Several students eventually accept permanent employment with their co-op employers but many others find they have multiple offers to select from and often with a higher average starting salary.
How long will it take to secure a position? What will determine my ability to obtain a good co-op position?
That depends on several factors. We do not guarantee anyone a co-op position. If you are interested in only a certain industry or certain geographic locations, your job search will become more difficult. If you accept interviews offered to you, schedule your interviews within a reasonable time frame and maintain contact with the co-op office, it is unlikely that you would fail to get a position. Having access to a car makes a big difference in the number of opportunities you will have. Your willingness to relocate or have a longer commute has an impact on the number of companies available to you. Being flexible about relocation definitely assists students. Other factors affecting your employability will be your computer skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills, previous experience, grades, and interviewing skills.
Where do Saint Joseph University Co-op students work?
A majority of Saint Joseph's University students will work in the Delaware Valley, South Jersey or Wilmington, Delaware. There are no restrictions depending upon job availability. Students may choose to work in a different geographic region or internationally.
Are transfer students eligible for the Co-op Program?
Yes, as long as they meet the minimum requirements and have the correct number of credits to participate. Transfer students are encouraged to contact the co-op office as soon as possible to determine their eligibility.
Am I considered a full time student while I am working?
Yes. Students must register for off-campus leave during the fall and spring/summer work terms.
Can I change majors?
Yes. The co-op experience allows students to realistically evaluate their major field of study. A change of major mid-Sophomore year, for example, can be made with little loss of credit and time in school.
When can I begin work?
You may begin your work assignment the fall of the sophomore year. During your four years of college, you obtain one full year of work experience without extending college study beyond four years.
Do you assist in preparation for an interview and in writing resumes?
Yes. Students must attend mandatory workshops on interview skills and resume writing, which will be held throughout the fall and spring semesters. The co-op staff is also available to meet individually with students and students may take advantage of scheduling a mock interview with a co-op staff member. The Career Development Center also hosts workshops throughout the year for students as well.
What about housing while off-campus at work?
Students may choose to live at home, on campus or off-campus while on their work assignments.
Can I develop my own co-op position?
Yes, if the work is related to your major and the employer is acceptable to the Co-op office.
Will I earn enough money to pay my expenses while at school?
That depends on several factors. The co-op program is designed to emphasize academic and professional experiences rather than provide financial aid. However, students should be advised that co-op earnings are taken into account when determining eligibility for financial aid. Financial aid is generally not available to students while they are on co-op assignments. The aid will be available for the terms when the students are in class.
Can I work summers only?
No! We do not have a “summers only” program. Our students complete the program by rotating between work and school according to the co-op schedule.

No. Your co-op employer may or may not offer you permanent employment after graduation. A majority of students receive offers from their co-op employers.
Will I receive special recognition for completing the Co-op Program?
Yes. Your work experience is a permanent part of your transcript. You are also awarded a co-op certificate signed by the Dean .
