Fr. Rashford has been President since 1986,
and will
complete
the second-longest presidential term in
university history following Commencement
exercises
in May. By any measure, Father
Rashford’s 17-year tenure as the school's chief executive has been remarkable.
Even a casual
look at the revitalized
Saint
Joseph
’s
campus will
convey the dramatic impact of his presidency.
Academically,
the university has seen its rankings rise consistently in, among other
publications, U.S. News & World Report, Peterson’s and
Barron’s.
It has added a prestigious Phi Beta Kappa chapter in the liberal
arts and gained accreditation from AACSB International for the Haub
School
of
Business
.
The size and quality of incoming freshman classes have
been at record levels for several years.
More
than $100M in new facilities and campus beautification projects have also been
completed under Father Rashford’s leadership. Mandeville
Hall, Post Hall, the Chapel of
St.
Joseph
and the
McShain/City
Avenue
Bridge Complex have given the university state-of-the-art technology and
living/learning space commensurate with its rapidly expanding academic programs.
Father
Rashford spent four years in the U.S. Navy before entering the Society of Jesus.
He holds a master’s degree in management science from
the
Massachusetts
Institute of Technology and a doctorate in behavioral
sciences from The Johns Hopkins University. From 1973 to 1975, while
working
on his doctorate, he served as assistant to the dean at Johns
Hopkins
.
His teaching career began in 1975 at
Michigan
State
University
Medical
School
where he taught behavioral sciences.
Prior to being elected
the
25th president of
Saint
Joseph
’s
University, he was professor of business management and later became the first
dean of the
School
of
Business
Management
at
Rockhurst
College
,
Kansas
City,
Missouri
.
A
force for positive change on campus and off, Father Rashford has been an
international spokesman for the value of higher education, a regional civic
leader in the government and non-profit arena. He serves on the
Boards of the
Philadelphia
Regional
Port
Authority, Greater
Philadelphia
Chamber
of Commerce and the City Avenue Special Services District.
