Enterprise Risk Management
ERM is gaining greater internal and external stakeholder traction in both the Oil & Gas and Power/ Utility sectors.  In May, 2008 Standard & Poor's published its “Report on ERM Assessment for Nonfinancial Companies.”  The Report clearly indicated that ERM assessment would be included early in these.  Equity analysts implicitly compare risk management activity in the companies they cover, and this assessment is reflected in their P/E multiples.
This interactive module will blend different ERM interpretations or frameworks with a practical under- standing of what establishing Risk Culture, Governance, Controls and Strategy really means to the Oil & Gas and Power/Utility community.  It will focus on how companies are adopting and adapting familiar planning and performance management processes to create risk-aware environments, and how best-fit can become best practice.

Project Financing and Insurance.
This module should ideally blend some theory with practice of non-recourse/partial recourse financing.  Part of the insurance side would seem to be contractual relationships between owners/financing partners and their insurance interest; part would seem to be issues involved in insurance availability and the ramifications on project success.

Today’s Environmental Issues
No one in the energy sector can escape the long reach of environmental requirements.  Whether a corporation is embarking on a voluntary effort to “go green”, or expends considerable effort to comply with regulations, the environment presents a number of risks and rewards. This module will focus on these major areas of impact:

  • climate change - the operational, financial and regulatory risks of greenhouse gas regulation
  • air regulation - recent court decisions that have created chaos and uncertainty for utilities and manufacturers
  • water regulation - review a pending Supreme Court case that will determine whether facilities must retrofit with cooling towers
  • nuclear environmental issues - states regulating in radioactive space and the lessons learned from tritium releases
