Hugh Walsh and Rick Savarese enter their seventh season as coaches for the Saint Joseph's men's ice hockey team. The 2007-2008 season marks the third year the Hawks have been in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association (MACHA). Walsh is just the second head coach in the 36 year history of the program. In his seven seasons (three as head coach) behind the bench, Walsh has coached a variety of championship caliber teams. His 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 teams both captured the Liberty Bell Championship for the first two times in program history
Walsh graduated from Saint Joseph's University in 1985 where he played on two (1982, 1984) Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference (DVCHC) Championship teams. Walsh was a defenseman known for his strong two way play and leadership. His playing days at SJU were special to him because he had the privilege of playing for SJU ice hockey founder Finbarr O'Connor.
Savarese graduated from Saint Joseph's University in 1982 where he played on two (1981, 1982) DVCHC Championship teams. Savarese was captain of the 1982 championship team who played on the top line as the set-up man and never backed down from a challenge. His immense passion for the game is still evident in his role as coach. Along with Walsh, Savarese played under Coach O'Connor.
Throughout their tenure, Walsh and Savarese have insured that the long standing tradition of Saint Joseph's hockey be upheld through hard work and commitment. Their leadership on and off the ice as both players and now, as coaches, have made them valuable members the Saint Joseph's community.
