The 2011-2012 season for the Saint Joseph's University Ice Hockey Team is the teams 40th Anniversary Season.

The team organized in 1971 was student run but then for the 1972 season Finbarr O'Connor initiating his SJU coaching career that spanned 34 years winning 5 league championships and numerous playoff appearances.

The Hawks are now lead by co-head coaches Hugh Walsh, '85 and Raoul Ignatz. Rick Savarese, '83 is an assistant coach and Lindsey Votto, '12 is the team's power skating coach. John Hyland is the team's Recruiting Director. Walsh and Savarese played for Coach O'Connor helping Coach win three of his Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference Championships in a 4 year period.

The Hawks now play in the very competitive Mid Atlantic Hockey Confernce were they are the only team in the 6 years they have played in the Conference to make the playoffs each year. Other schools in the league include: Temple, Rider, Rowan, Penn State Main, Delaware, Monmouth, UMBC, Virginia Tech, Liberty, East Carolina and Kennesaw State.

The team's leadership has ensured the long standing hockey tradition at SJU through commitment and loyalty to the program. The players understand the loyalty involved when they see on an average 80 alumni come back for the alumni game.
