- Georgia Statewide Academic and Medical System (GSAMS) is a
statewide network comprising over 371 Distance Learning sites in
K-12, College, Technical Schools, Universities, Dept. of
Corrections, Children and Youth Services, numerous State Agencies
and other Private Funded locations. In addition, there are over 46
TeleMedicine sites in various medical institutions throughout
Georgia.
Conferences within GSAMS are either Point to Point or Multi-point
(MCU) at a rate of 768kbs. Telemedicine connections are at a full
T-1 rate of 1536kbs. Any of these Distance Learning locations can
be accessed via a "Gateway" system operated by GSAMS in Atlanta,
GA. The Gateway is able to link with most video-teleconferencing
systems throughout the world either through direct dial-up
connections or through other bridging services such as U.S.
Sprint, AT&T, British Telecom (BT), etc. Connections can be
made via ISDN, Switched 56, or I-MUX up to 1536kbs. Upgrades in
April, 1997 include local bridging of multiple gateways sites (at
128kbs) to multiple GSAMS sites in Georgia.
