Father George Ruggieri, S.J. Scholarship

Father George Ruggieri, S.J. was an internationally known marine biologist, distinguished scholar, innovative administrator and beloved teacher. Father Ruggieri was not only an alumnus of Saint Joseph’s University but he also served as a faculty member in the Biology Department. Following his years at SJU, Father Ruggieri served as the Director of the New York Aquarium and is credited with developing it into a major cultural and educational conservation and research facility.
The $10,000 scholarship is awarded annually to one freshman who resides in Brooklyn, NY, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or Delaware and declares a major in the Natural Sciences (Biology, Chemical Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or Physics). Typical recipients have achieved above a 3.5 cumulative high school grade point average on a 4.00 scale and an 1150/1600 SAT or 25 ACT. The scholarship is renewable for four years of undergraduate studies while enrolled at Saint Joseph’s University. Applicants are required to apply for admissions to Saint Joseph’s University by the Early Action deadline of November 15. Finalists will be required to come to campus for an interview on March 16th, 2013.
To apply for the Ruggieri Memorial scholarship, applicants must submit the following documents to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by the scholarship application deadline of February 1:
- Fr. George D. Ruggieri, S.J. Memorial scholarship application.
- Personal Statement - Submit with this application a one-page essay (200-300 words) that explains why you are interested in the natural sciences.
- A letter of recommendation from a science teacher who can attest to your interest and achievements in the sciences (can be attached to application by student or sent to firstname.lastname@example.org from teacher).
- A resume of work experience and/or extracurricular activities demonstrating your leadership ability.
