Online English as a Second Language Endorsement K-12 (ESL)
The ESL Endorsement at Saint Joseph's University prepares the students who have a valid Pennsylvania Instructional I or II certificate to obtain the Pennsylvania Program Specialist-ESL Certificate. All teachers who work in ESL programs in the State of Pennsylvania must hold a Program Specialist-ESL Specialist Endorsement. The program is also open to those who are interested in teaching students who are learning English as a second language. The program aims to help candidates develop theoretical understanding and pedagogical knowledge and skills that are needed in working with ESL students.
The online ESL Certification Program requires five core courses that include (a) English Linguistics (b) Language and Culture (c) Second Language Acquisition and (d) Methods in Teaching ESL (with lab). The program aims to help the candidates develop the theoretical understanding and the pedagogical knowledge and skills needed to work with the English language learners.
Sixteen credits of coursework are required to complete the program as well as the special one-credit field experience associated with a specific course. All courses meet weekly in the evening. Students are able to complete the program from three- four semesters depending on the number of courses they choose to take each semester. View course descriptions.
