Why Latin American Studies?

Five reasons to consider the Latin American Studies Program at Saint Joseph’s University

  • Outstanding faculty focused on undergraduate education

Our award-winning faculty is drawn from across theUniversity.  Recognized equally for the qualities of their teaching and research, they embrace the Ignatian concept of cura personalis ("care of the whole person”), which manifests in strong mentoring inside and outside the classroom.
  • Curriculum tailored to individual student needs

The Latin American Studies Program is available to students in any major.  Recent graduates include students from the departments of Management, Biology, History, International Relations, Economics, Sociology and Spanish.
  • Fantastic opportunities for study and service in Latin America

Over the last two years alone, Saint Joseph’s University students have been offered the opportunity to participate in curricular and co-curricular programs in Mexico, Chile, El Salvador, Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina, Uruguay, and the Dominican Republic.
  • An enduring institutional commitment to the region

The Latin American Studies Program at Saint Joseph’s University celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2010.  Over the last half-century, the program has provided hundreds of students the opportunity to know and care deeply about the region, and to enjoy careers in which they share that expertise and concern with others.  This history provides a rich support network for students and alumni.
  • A web of Ignatian connections

The University’s strong ties to other Jesuit institutions throughout the region have provided our students with unique opportunities, whether it’s learning from visiting faculty from El Salvador and Peru or gaining insight into Bolivia’s indigenous peoples by touring the primary schools of the Fe y Alegría organization.
