Major, Minor and Teacher Certification

Requirements

Italian Major

The Italian major requires that students take either 201 or 202 and eight approved courses at the 300 level or higher. However, if the placement process determines that the student ought to begin studies in Italian in a higher level than 201/202, then students is required to take 10 courses at the 300 level or higher to fulfil major requirements. Courses taught in English, do not count toward the major or minor. Students may also elect to combine a major in Italian with another major and find that such a double major opens a variety of international career opportunities.

Italian Minor

With the approval of the Modern and Classical Languages department, students may elect a minor in Italian by taking six courses beyond the second-year level.

The Italian Program at SJU is proud to be among a few programs in Pennsylvania able to award teacher certification in Italian. Students majoring in Italian may minor in Education to obtain an Instructional I, Secondary Education (7-12) PA Teaching Certificate.  Students must have and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher to be accepted into the teacher certification program.

Education minor consists of six courses, three with a field experience component in addition to student teaching.  Students spend a total of 72 hours in classroom prior to student teaching, including preparing and teaching lessons, as well as observing and analyzing the teaching of the host teacher.
