  • The Speech Accent Archive: Sponsored by George Mason University, this site presents audio files of 1241 native and non-native speakers of English from many different geographical locations reading the same English passage. The database can be searched according to several interlinked categories or browsed by speaker/language, atlas/region, or native phonetic inventory (which includes phonetic charts of the sounds found in a given language). The audio readings are presented with the English text, a phonetic transcription, and a link that will analyze the potential and actual phonetic generalizations found in the reading. This site thus presents an invaluable collection of readings that can be studied in numerous ways; Sandra Hellmuth of the School of Oriental and African Studies in London has posted an abstract and pdf of a presentation she gave on using this site in an Applied Linguistics course.
