Faculty Mentoring

This document was presented to the theology department as a set of general guidelines rather than formal, juridical policy. It may be of some value to other departments to adapt to their own respective circumstances.

SJU Theology Department, 2004
Responsibilities for Departmental Mentors

Year I

  1. Review and discuss each aspect of the syllabus for each class, both semesters.
  2. Observe each class (not necessarily each section) at least twice during the semester; once before and once after midterms. Debrief after each observation.
  3. Ask if “mentee” would like to observe one or more of your classes and review your syllabi.
  4. In spring, review results from fall semester standardized teaching evaluations.
  5. Discuss the research agenda. In the fall semester meeting on this topic, get an idea of the overall scope and direction. Meet again early in the second semester to review progress.
  6. During the second semester, initiate a conversation about university service to explore concrete options our colleague may wish to pursue.

Year II

  1. In year two, schedule at least one observation per semester, and check in on their research and service later in the fall semester.
  2. Review results from standardized teaching evaluations and other pedagogical concerns, if any.
  3. In fall semester of year two, discuss specifics of putting together the file for the three-year pre-tenure review.

Year III

  1. Review progress on completion of pre-tenure file.
  2. Review results from standardized teaching evaluations and other pedagogical concerns, if any.
  3. Discuss necessity/desirability of more classroom observations.
