We are a department of 11 faculty members, over 400 undergraduates majoring in marketing and sports marketing, and over 100 students in other programs in the department, including the communications major and minor, the music industry minor, and forthcoming minors in sports marketing and in entertainment marketing. We also have approximately 50 graduate students in our Master's In International Marketing Program.
Our areas of focus are in marketing communications (advertising and promotion), consumer behavior and lifestyle marketing, international marketing, and entertainment and sports. Some of the companies that hire our graduates include the Camden Riversharks, DuPont, General Mills, Hess Corp., Kraft Foods, Morgan Stanley, Nationwide Insurance, Nordstrom, Philadelphia Insurance Companies, PepsiCo Foodservice, the Philadelphia Eagles, Unilever and Wal-Mart.
One of our major strengths is a very vibrant, active - and award-winning - student chapter of the American Marketing Association. This group sponsors events, participates in service activities, and hosts speakers on campus, as it provides a significant enhancement to the undergraduate marketing experience.
We also have a Center for Consumer Research, led by Dr. Michael Solomon, who is one of the world's leaders in consumer behavior and lifestyle research, and the author of several leading textbooks in marketing, consumer behavior, and soon, social media in marketing. He is assisted by Dr. Natalie Wood, an expert in social and digital media. Dr. Wood can help you create your own avatar!
Dr. Allan heads our music and entertainment areas, along with another faculty member, Dr. Janée Burkhalter, who has a strong research interest in subcultures as well as music and entertainment as marketing communications outlets. Dr. Brent Smith is focused on the study of culture and ethics, and has conducted research in the area of applying culture and ethics theory to the behavior of sports fans. Dr. Diane Phillips, an expert in sustainability, offers courses in the area, and has led study tours to examine how sustainability works in other countries. Dr. James Kelley, who did his doctoral work in Australia, is focusing his research on global brand strategy. Dr. Feng Shen, a native of China who completed his doctorate at the University of Florida, focuses on research and quantitative methods.
Professor Donna Falgiatore is a former advertising executive who brings her experience and expertise into the classroom, and coordinates the department's internship program. Our newest faculty member is Professor Susan O'Malley, who will focus in the sports marketing area and is the former CEO of Washington Sports & Entertainment, where she ran the Capitals (NHL), Wizards (NBA), Mystics (WNBA) and the Verizon Center. Finally, Dr. John Lord, chairperson of the department, heads up the sports marketing effort and writes on the business of baseball.
We are also fortunate to have a group of affiliate (part-time) faculty members who possess expertise in various areas of marketing and sports marketing. Among these is Kim Richmond, who is a former advertising executive and is now a public relations consultant. Professor Richmond serves as chair of our communications advisory board. Faust Capobianco, former CEO of Majestic Athletic, exclusive on-field apparel licensee of Major League Baseball, teaches in the sports marketing program and serves as chair of our sports advisory board.
