Enterprise Risk Management

A “primer” on ERM. ERM is gaining greater internal and external stakeholder traction in both the Oil & Gas and Power/ Utility sectors.

This interactive module will blend different ERM interpretations or frameworks with a practical under- standing of what establishing Risk Culture, Governance, Controls and Strategy really means to the Oil & Gas and Power/Utility community. It will focus on how companies are adopting and adapting familiar planning and performance management processes to create risk-aware environments, and how best-fit can become best practice.

Today’s Environmental Issues
No one in the energy sector can escape the long reach of environmental requirements.  Whether a corporation is embarking on a voluntary effort to “go green”, or expends considerable effort to comply with regulations, the environment presents a number of risks and rewards. This module will focus on these major areas of impact:

  • climate change - the operational, financial and regulatory risks of greenhouse gas regulation
  • air regulation - recent court decisions that have created chaos and uncertainty for utilities and manufacturers
  • water regulation - review a pending Supreme Court case that will determine whether facilities must retrofit with cooling towers
  • nuclear environmental issues - states regulating in radioactive space and the lessons learned from tritium releases

Project Financing and Insurance
This module begins with a brief discussion of why and when project finance makes sense from the perspective of financial theory. Then, using some actual projects as illustrative cases, the module will cover the principal types of project risks and how they are allocated or mitigated in a project financing, including the typical types of contracts employed. Finally, the module will discuss the requirements of banks (or other providers of debt) and how the relationship between project owners, banks and the project’s customers might be optimized. The objective of the module is to provide a broad understanding of how a project financing is organized and how insurance contracts fit into the project structure.
