Expectations for Students and Faculty
- Students will engage in some form of scholarly activity under the direction of one or more Saint Joseph's University faculty members, during the summer of 2015. The scholarly activity may take many forms, including independent research, the production of original writing or artwork, or working with the faculty mentor on a specific project relating to their discipline.
- The purpose of the Summer Scholars Program (SSP) is to allow students to engage in experiential learning within an area of their interest. Importantly, the project should, wherever possible, compliment the faculty mentor's scholarly agenda. The ideal situation is where the student's project has the potential to result in a co-authored publication, presentation, showing etc.
- As the program entails, by its nature, a formal mentoring relationship, Summer Scholars and their faculty mentors are expected to meet routinely throughout the course of the summer. The nature of this interaction is open but in most cases will occur via face - to - face meetings. This interaction is essential to the development of the student within the discipline. Students who fail to fulfill this obligation with their mentors will be liable to removal from the program.
- Part of the function of the SSP is to provide a means for both students and faculty mentors to be exposed to scholarship both within and outside of their disciplines and fields. One informal mechanism to foster this interchange is through various events held during the summer for students and faculty. These events are both informal and voluntary and a schedule will be distributed at the start of the summer program. As a formal means of engaging students and faculty in the exchange of ideas and other products of their scholarly activity, students participating in the 2015 SSP will be required to participate in the 2016 Celebration of Student Achievement activities. They will also be required to submit a one page, written description of their work, before the end of the summer period. This description will be included in the book published for the Summer Scholars Celebration dinner held in the fall. The obligation to provide both the written description of the scholarly work and to present the work at the Celebration of Student Achievement is born equally by both the Summer Scholar student and the faculty mentor. Failure to fulfill these obligations will negatively impact subsequent applications for support from the SSP.
- Students being compensated for participating in the SJU SSP are expected to engage in at least 400 hours of work relating to their scholarly activity. This is the equivalent of working ten weeks for 40 hours per week. Depending on the nature of the project and the source of funding support, students may be required to formally record their hours spent engaged in work. Any such requirements will be specified by the faculty mentors at the start of the summer program. Given the scope of the project, Summer Scholars are NOT permitted to have a full-time job during the summer or be on COOP. Part-time jobs (fewer than 20 hours per week) OR one or two summer courses MAY be acceptable but these REQUIRE advance approval (in writing) of your faculty mentor. Students who are found to be non-compliant with these requirements will be removed from the program and required to repay all of the stipend received to that date.
- Some projects may entail other obligations or requirements. These will be specified by the faculty mentor at the start of the summer program.
- Given the level of creative and intellectual activity expected of participants in the SSP, students will normally be required to have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.8 in the semester before they apply (i.e. a student applying for summer, 2015 would need to have a cumulative GPA of 2.80 or higher at the end of the fall, 2013 semester). Students in the Barbelin Scholars Program will need to meet the minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA requirement of their Board Scholarship in order to participate in the program.
