Wynnefield is named after Dr. Thomas Wynne who sailed with William Penn for Pennsylvania in the "Welcome" in August, 1682. On the voyage, Penn sought the assistance and advice of the Welsh patriarch and physician, in reference to the formation of the government of his province. Dr. Thomas Wynne was selected a Speaker of the Assembly, and presided over it during the sessions in Philadelphia in 1682 and 1683.
