The timeframe of the aforementioned, unspecified threat against a university "near Philadelphia" has passed without incident. Classes will continue as scheduled.

The Office of Public Safety remains in continuous contact with federal and local authorities, and as an ongoing precaution, the Office of Public Safety urges students, faculty and staff to remain vigilant and report suspicious behavior by dialing 610-660-1111 (from campus, ext. 1111) or, in an actual emergency, dial 911. Added patrols by Public Safety and Security, as well as Philadelphia and Lower Merion Police will continue.

There have been many rumors over the last 24-48 hours. The most reliable sources for information are the University's official channels. Please be sure you are signed up to receive alerts from the Emergency Notification System and check that your contact information is current. As always, remain in contact and share updates with your families. Further updates will only be sent if there is new information to share.

(Monday, October 5, 10:30 a.m.)

The Office of Public Safety remains in continuous contact with federal and local authorities regarding the unspecified threat against area colleges and universities for 2:00 p.m. today. The F.B.I. has reiterated that no individual institutions, (including SJU) in Philadelphia or nationally, have been targeted and that the credibility of the originating social media post remains under investigation. The notification was made as a precaution.

To that end of precaution, there will be additional Public Safety patrols on the Saint Joseph's campus for the duration of the threat as well as added external patrols from both the Philadelphia Police Department and Lower Merion Township Police. These measures are in addition to the standard safety operations in place at the University on a daily basis. Classes are proceeding as scheduled and all offices are open.

In response to ongoing media and social media reports, it is important to rely on official sources of information such as ongoing Public Safety alerts. There have NOT been any evacuations, closings or other official actions at SJU. Saint Joseph's University operates a secure Emergency Notification System (ENS). To ensure you receive the most current, official information, please click here to update your emergency contact information.

As in all cases, if there is official action it is important to be familiar with the University's emergency procedures, which can be found online at Several resources can be found on this page as well.

Once again, personal vigilance and awareness is the best safety measure. Please contact the Office of Public Safety (x1111) if you see any unusual activity on campus or, in an actual emergency, dial 911. We will continue to update all students, faculty and staff as needed. We encourage all students to communicate updates to their families.
