Philadelphia Service Immersion Program (PSIP)

Coordinator and Leader Descriptions

Student Coordinator Application Deadline: Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at 11:59 pm. 

Student Leader Application Deadline: Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at 11:59 pm.

Requirements:

  • Ideal applicants will have substantive service experience at SJU and a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5
  • No prior involvement in PSIP is necessary for the leader position, but we ask that coordinators have either been participants or leaders at least once before
  • Students in other leadership positions such as Orientation Leader and RA may not apply due to overlapping time committments
  • Students who are studying abroad, doing co-op, or not taking classes on campus in Fall 2016 may not apply

Availability: Friday, August 19, 2016 - Saturday, August 27, 2016 (includes mandatory PSIP training) 

Note: Coordinator and Leader positions are volunteer.

PSIP Student Coordinator

Student Coordinators are responsible for general oversight of the week of PSIP, as well as collaborating with school administrators and faculty to design and implement a specific program for the week.  Primary responsibilities include:

  • Working with Intern to select Student Leaders
  • Planning and facilitating Student Leader training with Intern
  • Acting as a Student Leader during large-group trips, Philly Destinations and campus activities
  • Serving as a primary contact for Student Leaders should any emergency issue arise
  • Engaging with freshman participants and encouraging thoughtful discussion of social justice issues
  • Developing potential topics for small-group reflection and discussion for Student Leaders
  • Checking in with both Student Leaders and freshman participants throughout entire week, including daily debriefing sessions for Student Leaders
  • Acting as a good representative of SJU in public and refraining from illegal substances
  • Assisting in assessment of PSIP (after week of PSIP)

 

PSIP Student Leader

Student Leaders are responsible for overseeing a group of freshmen for the duration of the week of PSIP.  Primary responsibilities include:

  • Guiding freshmen on SEPTA to and from service each day in a safe and timely manner
  • Planning and facilitating nightly small-group reflection and discussion
  • Acting as a leader during large-group trips, Philly Destinations and campus activities
  • Collaborating with faculty member to arrange a Philly Destination day
  • Sustaining substantive dialogue with freshmen participants and encouraging thoughtful discussion of social justice issues
  • Acting as a good representative of SJU in public and refraining from illegal substances
