Background Begin your company research here. Hoover's provides introductory information and financials on thousands of public and private companies.
Financials and background on U.S. and foreign publicly-traded companies
Provides background and financials for both U.S. and foreign-based publicly traded companies. Mergent records may include presentation-quality FactSheets (aka TearSheets) and for many (but not all) companies.

This package of Standard & Poor's publications include the Industry Surveys, Global Industry Surveys, The Register, CreditWeek Focus , Stock Guide, Bond Guide, and Earnings Guide.

Datamonitor Company Profiles - (in Business Source Complete: using the  Business Searching Interface (BSI)) -  10,000 of the largest business entities in the world (public and private) are covered. Content often includes a SWOT analysis. (click on the "Company Profiles" button on the navigation column).

Additional sources/coverages for Philadelphia Inquirer History To locate a history: type in your company name and select "history" from the left menu.
Example: Hoover's history for Avon Products, Inc. Provides detailed histories of the largest and most influential companies (public and private) and nonprofits worldwide. Each history runs between 3-10 pages, and include Key dates, Company Perspectives (mission, goals, ideals), Principal Competitors, Principal Subsidiaries, and Further Reading. Histories are updated periodically. For public companies (U.S. and non-U.S.) only. Search for your company by ticker or name and select "history" under "company details" tab.
