  Print/Microfilm in Library

coverage: 1851 - current : Entire paper cover to cover.
  • To locate in Library: (view catalog record)
  • When searching the time period 1851-1993, traditional print New York Times Index may be consulted.
  • Note: An easy way to search the NYT for any time period prior to 1981 is to use their free search engine. You can search the full text, author, or headline. You can also specify a date range or include advertisements and other listings in your search.

Once you have pinpointed a particular citation, you can come into the Library and retrieve the full text from our microfilm.

For newspapers, there is a caption search in Lexis Nexis Academic:

  • In Lexis Nexis Academic, click on the Guided News Search tab
  • Select General News as a news category and Major Papers as a news source
  • Change what you are searching in from Headline, Lead Paragraph, Terms to Caption and type your search words in the box.
  • Change the date, or type in a certain publication title, if necessary.
  • Click on the Search box.

Since pictures are not available online through Lexis Nexis Academic, you will still need to get the full article to see the actual picture. But at least it is possible to identify which paper and issue to go to.

3) The Readers Guide to Periodical Literature

For a quick picture lookup, try the Readers Guide to Periodical Literature in the Reference Index and Abstract shelves, call # AI3.95. Look up any subject, and look for article citations which have an "il" for "illustration" in them.

Advertisements

Advertisements are tricky because they typically are not indexed at all. A very interesting project at Duke University called Ad*Access gives access to 7,000 images from 1911 to 1955 in five main subject areas: Radio, Television, Transportation, Beauty and Hygiene, and World War II.

For commercials, libraries in the consortium have videorecordings of some from many time periods. Try a keyword search in the ALADIN Catalog, first limiting your search to "Videorecording".

Cartoons

1) Newspaper Indexes

The print index of the Washington Post, the LA Times, and the Christian Science Monitor index editorial cartoons. Look under "Editorial Cartoons," where a list of topics for that year will appear followed by citations.

2) WWW

There is a very good Web site for locating cartoons called Dale Cagles Professional Cartoonists Index. You can view many recent strips on various current issues, and be linked to the pages of professional cartoonists, syndicated, nonsyndicated, and editorial.

3) Historical Cartoons

For Civil War era editorial cartoons, try HarpWeek, an online database of Harper's Weekly during the Civil War, available on the ALADIN home page under Culture/Society/History.

For other historical cartoons, try the World Encyclopedia of Cartoons in the Library shelves, call number NC 1325 .W67
