Faculty Services Overview

Francis A. Drexel Library

The Francis A. Drexel Library, located between the Barbelin building and the Science Center, supports the academic programs of Saint Joseph's University with books and periodicals in both print and electronic formats, research e-Resources, audiovisuals and microforms. The Library has a collection of textbooks and accompanying materials for grades K-12 and a large selection of children's literature. In addition, the Library provides circulating collections of popular reading and audiobooks. The Saint Joseph's University Archives is housed in the Drexel Library.

The Library's holdings are accessible through our Library Catalog which can be searched from anywhere via the World Wide Web. The Library's Web pages allow access to many major Web-based services to support student and faculty research.

Materials not held by the Libraries at Saint Joseph's may be obtained through our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) department or through our consortial borrowing service, E-ZBorrow.

Note: There are two libraries on the Saint Joseph's University campus. In addition to the Francis A. Drexel Library, students, faculty and staff may use the Campbell Library.

Campbell Library, located in 157 Mandeville Hall, is a special information center fully supported by the Academy of Food Marketing. Campbell Library supports Food Marketing students and faculty and provides assistance to visitors from the food industry.  The print materials in Campbell Library may be searched or browsed through the Library Catalog.

Research

Electronic Resources of special interest to Faculty

Government Information>

Our Government Information Services Librarian is available to assist you in finding local, state, federal and international government resources. The e-Resources and Subject Guide for Government is a good starting place to locate references for Library materials, electronic publications and web links to government information from around the world. USA.gov is an invaluable tool for locating United States government information. Please call X1531 to talk with the Librarian, if you have specific questions about your research.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

  • Books:
    • via Francis A. Drexel Library's ILL Department
    • via PALCI's E-ZBorrow- A Pennsylvania consortial, patron-initiated system for borrowing books
  • Articles:

Francis A. Drexel Library's ILL Department fulfills requests for ILL articles. Articles are delivered to faculty in one of two ways:

      • when possible, articles are delivered to your desktop via SJU email (SJU email address ONLY)
      • when electronic delivery is not possible, articles are sent via campus mail to your department mailbox

Reference

  • Assistance - The staff is happy to assist faculty with questions regarding research and instruction. Please contact the Library liaison for your department. In addition, you may call a Librarian at the Information Desk (x1904) which is staffed over 90 hours/week.
  • In-person Access to Area Libraries/Resources - To receive borrowing privileges for certain area libraries in consortia with the Drexel Library, faculty may obtain "letters of introduction" from the Information Desk. With these letters, faculty will be able to borrow books from the libraries of most TCLC schools and some local PALCI schools.
  • Graduate Assistant Research - The Reference staff is eager to meet with Graduate Assistants to instruct them in research methods specific to both our Library and their academic area that will help to produce good results, quickly. We encourage you to direct your students to us early in the semester.

Services

Classroom Support

  • Persistent (Durable) Links - URLs that connect users directly to specific articles in a database and do so consistently for a fixed period of time.

A Library Liaison can help faculty create Persistent Links to our subscription e-Resources, allowing users easy access to full-text articles under copyright compliance.

In addition to persistent links to individual articles or journal-title access, it is sometimes possible to save a 'search strategy' in a persistent url. This makes it possible to run a "current awareness" or a research update on a particular subject search.

Library Instruction:

  • Course-Related Instruction Sessions - We encourage faculty to call the Information Desk and arrange for class instruction sessions. The Library has a 24 workstation Instruction Lab (seating 48 students) that allows for hands-on instruction sessions for both general and subject-specific research. Call the Information Desk (x1904) to arrange a time for instruction.

  • Evaluating Web Resources

  • Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education

Library Liaisons:

The Francis A. Drexel Library's collections are developed and managed by the Librarians in partnership with the faculty of the University. A liaison system has been set up to facilitate communication between the partners.

Faculty Scholarship Database:

The Library maintains a Faculty Scholarship Database of Saint Joseph's University Faculty publications and scholarly activities.
