How do I ... Find an Article When I Have a Citation?

  Some important background:

The Library subscribes to THOUSANDS of journals -- that is the good news! The bad news is that it can sometimes be confusing trying to locate a specific journal issue, because the University receives journals for varying date ranges and in several different formats:

Some journals are available only in hard copy format- -the current year's volume is usually available in single issues and older volumes are often bound and put in the stacks or are available on microfilm or microfiche.

Some journals are available only in electronic format. -- This usually means that the journal is contained in and accessible from one or more of our e-Resources (ex. Academic Search Premier, ProQuest Research Library, LexisNexis Academic etc.) or as part of an e-journal collection.

Some journals are available in both hard copy format and in electronic format. -- So you may often (but not always---again because of date range coverage) be able to choose the format that you prefer.

The best news of all is that in ALL cases the catalog record in The Library Catalog will specify the format(s) and location(s) where the full text of the journal can be retrieved.

Now for the details...

For this example we will be working with a citation found in a search of the ProQuest Research Library database using the keywords "canterbury tales":

"Species, Phantasms, and Images: Vision and Medieval Psychology in "The Canterbury Tales"; Warren Ginsberg; Speculum, Cambridge; Jan 2003; Vol. 78, Iss. 1; pg. 149 "

The journal title in this citation is Speculum.

From the Library's homepage: under the 'Find Books ' drop-down menu:

click JEROME---SJU's Library Catalog.
click JEROME---SJU's Library Catalog.

click Connect to Jerome

click Connect to The Library Catalog

In a Browse Search Click Browse Search

Enter Title of the Journal and click on Title in the drop-down

by Title: enter the exact title of the journal. Be sure that you are entering the exact Title of the Journal and NOT the Title of the Article. In our example: Speculum

Note: Entering abbreviated journal titles in not acceptable.

Note:The field name/abbreviations for Journal Titles in our database citations may vary. Ex. MLA uses 'Source' ('SO') for the Journal Title while ProQuest Research Library uses 'Publication Name' for the Journal Title.

From the alphabetical browse list, select your title--noting that more than one result may appear. Select your title

Click on 'FUll Record" From the 'Result List' follow through to the 'Full Record' to obtain the entire record the journal.

The 'Full Record' details when a journal is available in full-text on one or more of our subscription e-Resources---and includes the link to the database(s).

When a journal is available in print, that information also appears, with clear indications about which volumes are available in bound format (and the call number) and which volumes are on microfiche or microfilm.

Electronic and Print Holdings are displayed in the catalog record.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

  • If the journal title does not appear in the catalog (which means the University does not carry that journal)

    OR

  • If the catalog record shows that the Library does not carry the particular issue (date) that you need,

Then you may submit an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request and we will try to get a copy of the journal article for you from another university.
