Asian Educational Media Service  - Program of University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign's Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies to help educators locate audio-visual resources on Asia. Includes an annotated, searchable database of films and videos and other visual media for elementary through college.

Asian Studies Development Program (ASDP)  - Joint program of University of Hawaii and the East-West Center. Full-text database of Asian studies instructional materials contains course syllabi, bibliographies, and other documents collected by ASDP faculty. Subjects include women's studies, film, religion, and art. Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library   - Global collaborative project provides access to networked scholarly documents and resources. Maintained and updated (almost daily) by Australian National University. Links are inspected and evaluated before being added to site. ASIANetwork - Consortium of over 150 North American colleges fostering Asian Studies in liberal arts education.  AsiaSource- A comprehensive online resource developed by the Asia Society to meet the need for timely, reliable, unbiased information and assistance regarding the business, cultural, economic, social, historical, and political dimensions of Asia. Includes thousands of annotated links, a searchable glossary of terms, special reports on timely events, and unique features such as a guide to business protocol in 12 of Asia's major business markets and a directory of government leaders. Chinese biographical database - Useful for quick searches for notable Chinese individuals and the historical events search. [Reviewed]  The Chosun Journal - An independent, non-profit, reader-driven site intended to inform, provoke, and mobilize consciences for the sake of human rights in North Korea. Comprehensive handbooks, published between 1988 - 1998, that describe and analyze political, historical, economic, social, and national security systems and institutions in detail. Annotated bibliography. Published by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress.

Global Communications Platform from Japan - Launched by the Center for Global Communication at the International University of Japan to provide an online venue for Japanese leaders to express and dialogue about views on domestic and international affairs. Human Rights in China - HRIC is an international non-governmental organization founded by Chinese scientists and scholars in March 1989. HRIC monitors the implementation of international human rights standards in the People's Republic of China and carries out human rights advocacy and education among Chinese people inside and outside the country.

A Hundred Harvests: The History of Asian Studies at Berkeley - A virtual exhibit on the Web about the founding of the Asian programs that today are consistently rated the best or among the best in the country.

The Historical Text Archive - Original historical texts and secondary research materials for the study of the history of all regions and time periods. Search engine is included to locate links to specific texts or topics. Guide: Stanford Guide to Japan Information Resources - Topically arranged directory of information sources on Japan.

National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) - Students and researchers will find a number of useful resources such as as clearinghouse on contemporary Asian Affairs and policy-related issues, a searchable database of Asian specialists. Also offers a number of selected full-text publications and links to related research organizations, new sites, and electronic publications. [Reviewed] 

PopPlanet - part of the National Library for the Environment. This site contains PopEnvironment Linkages, which includes abstracts and links to over 14,000 books, reports, articles, organizations, and other materials, and presents up-to-date country specific information on key population, environment, and health issues. Topics include: biological, flora and mineral resources, water pollution and scarcity, land resources and degradation, health services, and health impacts from the environment. Can access reports, journal and newspaper articles, maps, conference papers, data sets, slide shows, etc. Includes three South Asia countries: Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. [Reviewed]

Digital Dictionary of Buddhism

SAWNET: South Asian Women's NETwork - All links are concerned with South Asian women's issues and cover a broad range of topics, including health information, legal issues, domestic violence, statistical data, cinema, and electronic resources. [Reviewed] 

Social Impact of the Asian Financial Crisis - Presented by the International Labor Organization. Explains the origins of the crisis; its social impacts in terms of unemployment, poverty, women, and migrant workers; lessons for future policy. References hyperlink to full text. [Reviewed]

Taiwan Studies Institute (TSI) - The Taiwan Studies Institute is a privately funded, nonpartisan research organization based in Taipei. Offers organized collection of resources on Taiwan and U.S. policy in the region, including news pieces, white papers, and legislative and other documents from the U.S. and UN. Also, has text of current and past issues of Taiwan Outlook.

Tibet Information Network (TIN) - Newsgathering service that balances official statements from Bejing, Lhasa, and Dharamsala with reliable first-hand testimony from native Tibetans. [SJU Facullty Recommendation- Dr. James Carter]

UCLA Center for East Asian Studies: Resources - Offers substantial materials and annotated links in East Asian studies. Includes reference works, online periodicals, government resources, lists of K - 12 classroom materials, and statistical information on East Asian demographics, politics, and economics. Also, full text copies of significant historical and contemporary documents. [Reviewed] 

Voyages of Discovery and Exploration: a guide - Developed by Andre Engels, faculty member and Ph.D. student in the Netherlands. Links to sites about explorers and explorations from all geographic regions and time periods. Asian Economic Forecast Overview: Far Eastern Economic Review - The February 1, 2001 issue contains an in-depth, country-by-country forecast of the Asian economy. Along with a broad look at the future of the Asian economy, including an analysis of the country's economic prospects. Current statistics for 2000 as well as estimates for 2001 and 2002 are included for: GDP, Fixed Investment, Industrial Production, Current Account, and Budget Balance and more. [Reviewed]

Asianart - Online journal for the study and exhibition of the arts of Asia. It offers a forum for scholars, museums, and commercial and private galleries. Has full-text articles, lengthy essays and travel reviews, and numerous images. Updated regularly. [Reviewed] 

Experiencing Southeast Asia in the Delaware Valley - This guide has been prepared by Professor Robert Wood at Rutgers-Camden for use by students in his Southeast Asian Societies course and by others who share a fascination with this unique part of the world. It is illustrated with slides from Professor Wood's visits to Southeast Asia between 1972 and 1999.

Modern Chinese Literature and Culture Resource Center - From Ohio State University's Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures. Provides abundant reference information on modern Chinese art, culture, film, and literature. Includes an images archive, a collection of Chinese e-texts, and bibliographies. [Reviewed]

Kyoto National Museum - Brings the Museum's collection to the global community. Can access groups of images by category, e.g., sculpture and calligraphy, in the Masterworks section or search by keyword or category in the database.[Reviewed] 

Religion Buddhist Studies WWW Virtual Library - From the Australian National University at Camberra -- created by T. Matthew Ciolek. Contains over 300 annotated resources in 10 topical areas.  [Reviewed]

The Avalon Project at the Yale Law School - Digitized documents relevant to law, diplomacy, politics, economics, and history, ranging in time from the Code of Hammurabi (1750 BC) to the present. Over fifty major collections include "Indochina - Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos," "Cold War Diplomacy - Defense Treaties of the United States," "The United States, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Area 1950 -1999 ," "World War II - Documents; 1940-1945," and much more. Japanese Historical Map Collection - Over 200 images of early maps of Japan from UC's ongoing collection --"East Asian Library's Japanese Historical Map Collection". There are three ways you can view the maps. Maps are printable and may be enlarged for detail.

Formosa: Nineteenth Century Images - Digital library hosted by Reed College gathers together a large number of images, primarily American and European, on the island of Taiwan (formerly Formosa). Includes full hyper-linked text of travelogues, reports, and ethnographies. Need Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer 4.0 or above to properly view site.
