Off-campus access allows currently registered SJU students, faculty, and
staff to log in to our Proxy Server (we use EZproxy software). The Proxy Server in turn will allow
the valid SJU users entry into the Library's restricted subscription services (those designated with our logo) from home, or work. Note that many of the Library's resources are not restricted,
and can be accessed from anywhere without Proxy Server involvement.
2.How do I get Off-campus access?
The Library's Proxy Server runs behind the scenes. The software detects when you are off-campus and have requested a restricted resource and then triggers a login page. (ex.) When the login page appears, enter your
standard SJU account information. This is the same information you use for MySJU, e-mail, Windows login, and other technology resources on campus.
3. I don't know if I ever received an SJU Network Account Password, what should I do?
After a
student is fully accepted and admitted by the undergraduate or graduate admissions office, the Information Technology Department mails a letter to the new student's home containing his/her SJU Network Username and an initial Password. If you have misplaced your account information, follow the instructions listed on the SJU Information Technology pages.
4.I forgot or misplaced my SJU Network Username/Password, what should I do?
Your SJU Username never changes (more information). To reset a forgotten Password, go to the MySJU login page and click on the "To reset
your password" link
on the right side of the page. Note that when you go through the process
of resetting your password, the change is immediate for entry into the MySJU
system. But it will take one hour for the resetting to take effect for the
SJU campus network access (email, logging into computers, and Library
off-campus access).
A full explanation of Username/Password issues and contact information for help is available on theSJU Information Technology pages.
5. AOL user?
AOL Users Please Note:
The IE-AOL browser that is your default browser does not have the functionality to allow access into our subscription databases. You must use a separate, standard browser package---not AOL's version. So do the following:
Log on to AOL as usual
Immediately minimize the AOL session so that it continues behind the scenes to give you connectivity to the Internet
Launch a full-blown browser such as Firefox or a stand-alone IE browser and then use this browser for your research session
6. My Username/Password works from my home but not from my workplace, what
should I do?
Often places of business will have special firewall software in place to
protect their network and/or to exclude certain Internet locations (filtering).
We cannot expect nor do we ask these individual IT departments to change
their access policy to enable our students off-campus access. In these cases,
off-campus access simply may not work.
However, if a student would like to talk to their IT department about
special access privileges, a piece of information that you need is the
IP address of our off-campus server: 129.68.65.26
7. I know that I logged in successfully, and was able to access some resources.
Now I am being sent to a login page for a electronic resource --- not for
Saint Joseph's -- (ex. Proquest login page). What is wrong?
The EZproxy software that we employ for off-campus access, actually rewrites URLs so that your request appears as if you are physically on the SJU campus. All of these "rewritten URLs" will be in the following format:
http://ezproxy.sju.edu/login?url=VENDOR_URL
If you do not see http://ezproxy.sju.edu/login?url= at the srart of the URL for your requested resource, you have somehow lost your authenication.
8. When I try to log in, I get a "Web-Authentication Login
Error"message. What is wrong?
9. My persistent links do not appear to be working.
In order for existing (as of Jan 2007) persistent links created to articles/journals in the Library's subscription resources to function properly, "old" links that were created to accommodate LibProxy software must be converted to our new EZProxy format.
There is a conversion table available to help you make the change more easily.
10. I need to "capture the URL" of my resource for bookmarking, citing in my bibliography, etc. Do I simply copy the URL in the address window of my browser?
The EZproxy software that we employ for off-campus access, actually rewrites URLs so that your request appears as if you are physically on the SJU campus. All of these "rewritten URLs" will be in the following format:
http://ezproxy.sju.edu/login?url=VENDOR_URL
You may want "capture the URL" for your resource and create what is often called a "persistent" or "durable link". To create a persistent link for most purposes such as bookmarking, or to suggest a URL to another person in the SJU community, you should leave the http://ezproxy.sju.edu/login?url= at the start of the URL and simply copy the link as it appears in the browser address window.
For citing the resource in your publications, use only the VENDOR_URL.
11. I am ON-campus but am not able to get through to a subscription resource .
EZProxy works differently than our previous authentication software. All our links to subscription resources have been altered by prepending http://ezproxy.sju.edu/login?url=. If for some reason the proxy server is down, no one will be able to get into our resources (off campus AND on campus). There is a workaround for users ON campus. If the resource you are attempting to access has the URL: http://ezproxy.sju.edu/login?url=VENDOR_URL simply use the VENDOR_URL.
