Certification Requirements

Program Options

The program will offer graduate level coursework for Pennsylvania Hearing Impaired K-12 certification and has the following options:

  • Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) Hearing Impaired K-12 certification (30 credits)
  • Master of Science in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing with PDE Hearing Impaired K-12 certification (36 credits)
  • Master of Science in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing with PDE Hearing Impaired K-12 certification and PreK-8 Special Education Certification (48 credits)
  • Master of Science in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing with PDE Hearing Impaired K-12 certification and 7-12 Special Education Certification (48 credits)

Student Teaching and Field Experience

The PA Department of Education requires all teacher candidates to complete field experience competencies in certification programs. The Special Education Department at Saint Joseph’s University has designated activities in each course in the required curriculum to meet the state standards. The last course in this program accompanies the student teaching experience. 

Comprehensive Program

The program is considered a "Comprehensive" program according to Council on Education of the Deaf (CED) national standards which means that all communication philosophies will be addressed in the program (Total Communication, Auditory-Oral, and Bilingual-Bicultural (ASL).
