The music major at Saint Joseph’s provides a comprehensive curriculum that deepens musical understanding and awareness, fosters creative expression and encourages critical analysis and inquiry. Leading to the Bachelor of Arts in Music, the major is designed within a liberal arts context, combining coursework in music theory, composition, history and performance. Courses equip you with the tools to understand and evaluate an existing body of work in both cultural and historic terms, and also teach you the technical skills needed to bring your own work to fruition.
Our music faculty members are accomplished, award-winning professionals whose primary focus is to provide you with an excellent, personalized education. As your mentors, they believe in your talent and will challenge and inspire you to reach your full potential, guiding you through substantive creative or research projects.
Students also participate in several performance ensembles sponsored by the Department of Music, Theatre and Film that offer many opportunities to engage in the art form. These include Big Band Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, University Singers, Concert Choir and various chamber music ensembles, presenting a wide array of events throughout the year. Individual lessons in voice performance and piano performance are also offered. Students may also minor in music.
Music majors receive excellent preparation for further study at the graduate level, and many students pursue careers in music, or excel in professions that combine music with other disciplines.
