  • SJU Theologian Earns Research Fellowship

    Hebrew Bible scholar Bruce Wells, Ph.D., assistant professor of theology, has been awarded a $52,000 Humboldt Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for his research on Neo-Babylonian trial procedure. The government of Germany established the Foundation to promote international research, and to foster long-term collaboration among researchers.

    Saint Joseph's University is a major beneficiary of an international agreement in 2005 between King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and President George W. Bush designed to increase the exchange of students and dialogue between the two nations.

  • A Jesuit's Daily Journal Chronicles Service in Chad

    Many people write in daily journals, preferring to keep their thoughts, comments and personal reflections private. However, Patrick Samway, S.J., professor of English, recently published a journal he kept while assisting Sudanese refugees several years ago in the hopes that readers would learn about the "genocidal war in Darfur," as he refers to it, and the experiences he had, sometimes quite personal, in setting up and running three primary schools in the Chadian desert.

  • Daniel J. Hilferty Honored with HSB Hall of Fame Award

    PHILADELPHIA (March 24 2008) – The Erivan K. Haub School of Business will recognize Daniel J. Hilferty III '78, president and chief executive officer of AmeriHealth Mercy, with the 18th Annual Hall of Fame Award during a dinner and award presentation on April 3. As the recipient of this award, Hilferty will be acknowledged for his outstanding corporate citizenship, strong leadership and management qualities.

  • Comey Institute To Offer Courses On Labor Issues

    PHILADELPHIA (February 22, 2008) — The Comey Institute of Industrial Relations at Saint Joseph's University in association with the Philadelphia AFL-CIO is launching a progressive program for the Institute by offering six new classes beginning on March 3, 2008.

    The revitalization of the Comey Institute comes with a new director, Thomas Paine Cronin, who is excited about the many advancements that the new curriculum will offer.

  • Israel at 60: 'Promised Land' for Jews AND Christians

    PHILADELPHIA (February 22, 2008) – For many, the State of Israel stands at the center of how the Jewish people perceive themselves – both as individuals and as a collective group. On Wednesday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m., Saint Joseph's University's Jewish-Catholic Institute will host an interfaith dialogue to explore Jewish identity with the Biblical promised land in "Israel at 60: 'Promised Land' for Jews AND Christians," in the Haub Conference Center in McShain Hall. The Saint Joseph's University Institute for Violence Research and Prevention (IVRP) and Faith-Justice Institute are co-hosting Violence Awareness Week, a teach-in to try to better understand why these crimes continue to occur and what measures can be taken to curb the violence in Philadelphia.

  • Student Senate Makes Mission a Priority

    The University Student Senate (USS) has created a new position on their Executive Board, the Vice President for Mission, which will be a crucial link between the ideals of Saint Joseph's University and its main student organization.

    Elise Baker '10 is the first Vice President for Mission. She was appointed to the job after an interview process among current student senate members.

    PHILADELPHIA (February 8, 2008) — Though it's not uncommon in most colleges to find young men and women pulling all-nighters, the 200 Saint Joseph's University students who are staying awake on Saturday, February 23 are not doing so in a caffeine-fueled cram session. Instead, as members of the national "Up 'til Dawn" program, they'll be celebrating a successful year of charity work for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

  • Students Bring Medical Aid to Haitian Refugee Camps

    As part of the theology course Just Health Care in Developing Nations, co-taught by Peter Clark, S.J., professor of theology, and Ann Marie Jursca, M.S.W., assistant director of the Faith-Justice Institute, 16 SJU students traveled to the Dominican Republic to aid children in Haitian refugee camps, or bayetes. Students were trained in basic medical procedures and packed 18 gym bags full of medication to stock a pharmacy at the bayete's clinic before making the 10-day service trip.

    Despite having the distinction of being the second largest food bank in the United States, Philabundance, Philadelphia's food rescue organization, is facing challenges meeting the needs of the city's hungry. The organization serves 100,000 people a week, through 600 cupboards and shelters, and is struggling to keep up with demand in the community.

    PHILADELPHIA (February 8, 2008) – Daniel Berrigan, S.J., poet-in-residence at Fordham University and one of the world's leading peace activists, will visit Saint Joseph's University for "An Evening with Daniel Berrigan" on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m., in the Chapel of St. Joseph–Michael J. Smith, S.J., Memorial. Fr. Berrigan will reflect on his experience of war protest, civil disobedience and imprisonment, and will also read from his poetry.

    The Erivan K. Haub School of Business' Co-op Advising Center has received an extreme office makeover. Although the center remains grounded in its original mission to serve the students enrolled in the business school's co-op program, the center's responsibilities have expanded to enculturate students into the professional environment.
