Security Officer Seeks Championships on Racquetball Court

To much of the Saint Joseph’s University community, Public Safety Officer Don Acklin’s athletic ability is unknown. Even fewer know that Acklin, 61, won the 2008 Pennsylvania State Racquetball championship, or that his preferred practice space is our very own Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.

Students to Serve as Translators at Polls on Election Day

While many Saint Joseph's University students will head to the polls on Election Day to vote, a group of student volunteers will join Heather Hennes, Ph.D., and Elaine Shenk, Ph.D., assistant professors of Spanish, in translating for Spanish-speaking voters in Philadelphia.

Community Day Boosts Messages of Service, Togetherness

More than 300 members of the Saint Joseph's University community joined together on Saturday, October 25, for the fourth SJU Community Day, a semiannual program uniting students, faculty and staff in embracing the Jesuit ideal of becoming men and women with and for others.
"Community Day is a day of campus-wide service aimed at strengthening our SJU community while serving those around us," said senior Hollyanne Pronko, student body president and one of the event's organizers.

Familiarity Breeds Ambiguity: 'Allegation of Use' at SJU Gallery

PHILADELPHIA (October 24, 2008) – The work of 3-D artist Ephraim Russell is featured in the next exhibit at Saint Joseph’s University’s Gallery. Titled “Allegation of Use,” the show runs from Nov. 10 to Dec. 12. An artist’s reception will be held on Friday, Nov. 14, from 6-8 p.m.

Board Approves New Undergraduate Curriculum

At their October 10, 2008 meeting, the University’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved the proposed new undergraduate curriculum, the culmination of a five-year process that sought to consider and define the nature and the goals of a Jesuit education in the 21st century and design a curriculum that would reflect them.

Words of Inspiration Support Wounded Troops

Saint Joseph’s is engaging in a community effort to support and inspire the United States wounded servicemen and servicewomen and their support staff as we approach the holiday season. The Words of Inspiration Campaign, sponsored by the Office of the President and the University Student Senate, seeks to gather words of support and encouragement and send them to the troops.

PHILADELPHIA (October 23, 2008) – Andrew C. von Eschenbach, M.D. '63, director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, will be honored with the Saint Joseph's University Alumni Association's most prestigious honor, the Shield of Loyola Award, on Friday, November 7, at the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue in Philadelphia.

Activist-Author Tim Wise to Speak at Saint Joseph’s University

PHILADELPHIA (October 20, 2008) – Prominent anti-racism author activist Tim Wise, author of White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son, will present a lecture titled “Between Barack and a Hard Place: Racism and White Denial in the Age of Obama,” at Saint Joseph’s University on Wed., Oct. 22, at 6 p.m., in the Chapel of St. Joseph – Michael J. Smith, S.J., Memorial.

SJU to Host Foreign Journalists Covering Presidential Election

What: Fresh from their attendance at the final presidential debate at Hofstra University the previous evening, more than 25 foreign political editors, journalists and correspondents touring the U.S. to learn about American elections will visit Saint Joseph’s University. The group will attend a lecture on the 2008 presidential campaign as well as a panel about the way the media reports the political process featuring members of Philadelphia print and electronic media.

Love in the Time of Swordplay: 'Romeo and Juliet' at SJU

Overbrook Hall Rededicated to Honor James W. Moore, S.J.

The longtime service of James W. Moore, S.J. was recognized by Saint Joseph's University on October 1 with the rededication of Overbrook Hall in his honor. The ceremony, which included remarks from William Madges, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Tiffany Conde '09 (New Cumberland, Pa.); Provost Brice Wachterhauser, Ph.D., and University President Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., took place on the steps in front of the renamed Moore Hall.

SJU Fund Creates New Opportunities for Initiatives, Revenue

A new program at Saint Joseph's is seeking ways to create and reward incentive through the development of innovative new initiatives and programs. The Saint Joseph's University Opportunity Fund was formally announced by University President Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., at the President's Convocation on Sept. 23, but according to Paul DeVito, associate provost and chair of the Opportunity Fund, the idea has been in the works for over a year.

Jennifer Powell, a senior accounting major at Saint Joseph's University, has been named a William G. McGowan Scholar for the 2008-2009 academic year. Powell is the fourth student at Saint Joseph's University to receive this distinguished scholarship.

The "Best 296 Business Schools" handbook surveyed over 19,000 students and ranked Saint Joseph's overall academic experience among the nation's most outstanding.

PHILADELPHIA (October 6, 2008)--Philadelphia is one of the most violent cities in America. Last year 392 homicides were recorded, and yet 49 percent of those remain unsolved. It can be hard to imagine, but young people who live in crime-infested neighborhoods and witness violence every day are often the last to report those crimes to police.

PHILADELPHIA (September 30, 2008) – Sr. Pauline Silver Acayo, a peace officer working in Uganda for Catholic Relief Services (CRS), will visit Saint Joseph's University on October 7 to discuss the conflict between the government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebel group. Her lecture, "Peacebuilding in Africa: the Case of Uganda," will be held at 7 p.m. in the Presidents' Lounge of Campion Student Center.
