SJU Releases Swine Flu Preparedness Plan

Saint Joseph’s University is actively monitoring the swine influenza (H1N1) cases in Mexico and other countries, including the U.S and Canada. We are working closely with local and state health officials to share information and prepare for the possibility that the outbreak may affect our community directly. We have actively engaged our Emergency Preparedness Plan regarding a potential influenza outbreak.

First Lady of Pa. to Address SJU Political Science Students

PHILADELPHIA (April 22, 2009) - The Honorable Marjorie O. Rendell, Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals, and First Lady, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, will deliver the Pi Sigma Alpha Distinguished Lecture at Saint Joseph’s University on Friday, April 24, 2009, at 8 p.m. in the Haub Executive Center of McShain Hall. Pi Sigma Alpha is the political science honors society at Saint Joseph’s.

Nerney Honored with HSB Hall of Fame Award

The Erivan K. Haub School of Business will recognize Thomas Nerney ’96 (M.B.A.), chairman, president and chief executive officer of United States Liability Insurance Group, with the 19th Annual Hall of Fame Award during a dinner and award presentation on April 23. As the recipient of this award, Nerney will be acknowledged for his outstanding community work, strong corporate leadership and management qualities.

‘Sunday In the Park With George,’ Sondheim’s Ode to Artists

PHILADELPHIA (April 7, 2009) – Stephen Sondheim's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning Sunday in the Park with George, a dramatic musical centered on the life of impressionist painter Georges Seurat, will wrap up the 81st season of Cap and Bells Dramatic Arts Society, Saint Joseph’s University’s theatre production program. The show opens Wednesday, April 22 at 8 p.m. in Bluett Theatre, and runs through Sunday, April 26.

SJU Announces Major Initiative in the Field of Autism

PHILADELPHIA (April 21, 2009) — Saint Joseph’s University formally announced the creation of The Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support on April 20, as part of the University’s 5th Annual Autism Awareness Day. The Center has received multiple gifts totaling in excess of $8 million, with lead support coming from Paul and Margaret Hondros. Paul Hondros is a graduate of the Class of 1970 and Chairman of SJU’s Board of Trustees. He and his wife Margaret are champions for autism.

20th Annual Sigma Xi Symposium Hosts Prominent Biophysicist

PHILADELPHIA (April 2, 2009) – The Saint Joseph’s University chapter of Sigma Xi, the International Scientific Research Society, will open its 20th annual Student Research Symposium on Friday, April 17, with a lecture by Sheila Patek, Ph.D., of the department of integrative biology at the University of California, Berkeley. The presentation, entitled “Airborne Ants and Smashing Shrimp: Accident and Intent in the Evolution of Movement,” will begin at 5 p.m.
