  • Students Encounter Cuban Health Care System During Immersion Trip

    <p>While most college students spent their winter break relaxing, 18 Saint Joseph&rsquo;s students experienced the realities of a health care system in a communist nation during an academic immersion trip to Cuba. Thanks to the removal of travel restrictions, the class was among the first groups of students from the United States to visit the Caribbean nation through a program run by the Augsburg College (Minneapolis) Center for Global Education.</p>

To address the needs of this essential population, The Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support at Saint Joseph&rsquo;s University will begin offering Sibshops, workshops designed to help brothers and sisters talk about their struggles and successes, learn to serve as a role models, and manage common situations.

(Jamie) Maguire Jr. ’84, chairman and chief executive officer of Philadelphia Insurance Companies (PHLY), with the 22nd Annual Hall of Fame Award during a dinner and award presentation on April 12. As the recipient, Maguire will be acknowledged for his outstanding corporate citizenship, strong leadership and management qualities.

    PHILADELPHIA (January 12, 2012) — Saint Joseph’s University will pay tribute to Philadelphia native Richard Johnson, who was shot and killed in 2005 by a 15-year-old assailant before the start of his freshman year at Saint Joseph’s University. SJU’s Institute for Violence Research and Prevention (IVRP), established in 2001, will formally change its name to the Richard Johnson Center for Anti-Violence during a dedication ceremony to be held Thursday, Jan. 19, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

    PHILADELPHIA (Jan. 11, 2012) – Though Jan. 16 kicks off the first week of the spring 2012 semester at Saint Joseph’s University, no classes will be held Monday. Instead, student-athletes will come together in service to others as part of SJU’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration. The 2012 holiday marks the 26th anniversary of the holiday’s national observance – it was first officially celebrated on Jan. 18, 1986.

    PHILADELPHIA (Jan. 11, 2012) — Now through March 7, coin collection boxes at registers in Wawa Food Stores across Pennsylvania will be gathering donations to benefit Saint Joseph’s University’s Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support. Funds from the collection specifically support Camp Kinney, a unique five-week summer experience that combines children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their neuro-typical peers.
