Charity Event Raises Dating Violence Awareness

PHILADELPHIA (October 23, 2012) — More than seven years after his 21-year-old daughter was brutally murdered by her boyfriend, Bill Mitchell still gets choked up. "I wake up each morning to a framed portrait of Kristin and I pray to her, and for her," he says. "If there is one good thing that has come from our pain, it's knowing that Kristin's story has saved others from suffering a similar fate."

Cedar Sculptures Twist with Life at SJU Gallery

PHILADELPHIA (Oct. 17, 2012) — Rachel Rotenberg’s collection of cedar sculptures featured in “Wood Work,” which will be exhibited Nov. 12-Dec. 10, in Saint Joseph’s University Gallery, seem to breathe and twist with life. The Gallery is located on the second floor of Merion Hall on the James J. Maguire '58 Campus. An artist’s reception will be held Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 6-8 p.m.

Haub School to Host Financial Symposium for Local Insurers

Saint Joseph's University's Academy of Risk Management and Insurance will host an Insurance Financial Symposium on Friday, Oct. 19, from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on campus. Area insurance professionals, actuaries and students will hear from senior partners and seasoned executives on the macro issues affecting the industry, including current market conditions, regulation, enterprise risk management, and the role of governance.

SJU, Lower Merion And Philadelphia Police To Stage Emergency Drill

PHILADELPHIA (October 15, 2012) -- Saint Joseph’s University will conduct an emergency preparedness exercise on Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., in LaFarge Hall and in the surrounding area on the University’s Philadelphia campus. The drill will consist of a simulated crisis scenario involving armed individuals on campus.

SJU Celebrates Formal Inauguration of 27th President

PHILADELPHIA (October 15, 2012) — Saint Joseph’s University officially inaugurated its 27th president C. Kevin Gillespie, S.J. ’72, on Friday, Oct. 12. The inaugural ceremony, held in the Michael J. Hagan ’85 Arena, was the culmination of a weeklong series of events. On hand to celebrate were more than 60 presidents and delegates from other colleges and universities, alumni, faculty, staff, students and Fr. Gillespie’s friends and family.

National China Town Hall Meeting to Convene at Saint Joseph’s

Accounting Debate Illustrates Challenge Over International Standards

While many companies worldwide use the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) to determine what’s listed as an asset or liability, the United States is one of the few countries that still uses its own accounting standards (U.S. GAAP).
Recently, there has been pressure to get a single set of international accounting standards for every company to follow, regardless of where it’s based. But that’s easier said than done.

PHILADELPHIA (Oct. 8, 2012) - John Berberian, Ph. D., professor of chemistry, has received a $302,228 Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) grant from the National Science Foundation for his proposal, “The Study of Molecular Motion in Simple Glass-Forming Liquids.”
Berberian hopes to further understand the forces involved in the behavior of simple glass- forming materials above and near the glass transition temperature, and points to practical applications for the research.

Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support Hosts Fall Carnival

What: The Kinney Center will host a carnival for families and donors, the SJU community, and the local autism community. The carnival is one of many events celebrating the official inauguration of C. Kevin Gillespie S.J. ’72 as 27th president of Saint Joseph’s University. The carnival will feature games and activities, food, and face painting for all ages.
When: Monday, Oct. 8, 2012 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rain or shine
