SJU Announces 2013 Commencement Speakers

PHILADELPHIA (March 28, 2013) — Saint Joseph’s University will grant honorary degrees to Elisabeth A. Hagen, M.D. ’91 (B.S.), under secretary for food safety for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and John W. O’Malley, S.J., university professor in the Department of Theology, Georgetown University, at the 2013 Commencement ceremonies, which are set for Saturday, May 11.

Alum, Adjunct Celebrates 40 Years of Post-POW Freedom

Ralph Galati ’70, adjunct faculty member of the master’s of business administration program at the Haub School of Business, is celebrating the 40th anniversary of his freedom from being held captive as a Prisoner of War (POW) in Vietnam.
Galati spent 14 months as a POW, including 75 days in solitary confinement, after he was shot down flying over North Vietnam and captured on February 16, 1972. He was released during Operation Homecoming on March 28, 1973.

Creating Social Value: Doing Well While Doing Good

On Wednesday, March 27, Saint Joseph's students will learn the value of ethical decisions in business during an on-campus event — Creating Social Value: Doing Well While Doing Good. The event, sponsored by the Pedro Arrupe Center for Business Ethics and the student organization, Net Impact, will be held in Mandeville Hall's Wolfington Teletorium from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

SJU Celebrates Election of Pope Francis

More than 1 billion Catholics witnessed the introduction of a new pope yesterday. Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio has been elected as the new leader of the church. He will be known as Pope Francis and will be officially installed on March 19, the Feast of Saint Joseph.

Students Spend Spring Break in Service to Others

On Friday, March 1, 470 Saint Joseph’s students and adult facilitators departed campus, marking the beginning of spring break. But instead of heading for tropical beaches for vacation, the students were headed for 16 service sites in Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia as part of the 20th year of the Appalachian Experience (APEX).

In Memoriam: Sister Francis Joseph, R.A.

Sr. Francis Joseph (Rachel) Scarpello, R.A., former assistant director of the Faith-Justice Institute, passed away on Feb. 28, 2013. She was 93.
To all who knew her, she was a remarkable and very wise woman.
Sr. Francis organized the Outreach Lecture Series for the Faith-Justice Institute at SJU as a way to connect the University with the wider Philadelphia Catholic community. Saint Joseph’s renamed the series after her in 2011.

Saint Joseph’s Named to President’s Community Service Honor Roll

PHILADELPHIA (March 7, 2013) - For the seventh consecutive year, Saint Joseph’s University has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has recognized the colleges and universities that are highly committed to volunteering and community service since 2006.
