PHILADELPHIA (August 12, 2010) — Autism diagnoses are on the rise. One in 110 children has an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). With the growing diagnoses comes a growing need to understand and learn to assist this population. Saint Joseph's University's College of Professional and Liberal Studies in conjunction with the University’s Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support is offering a new certificate program for adult undergraduate students with an interest in Autism studies.
The certificate in Autism studies program offers an introduction to the theories, techniques, treatment and therapies related to Autism. It is designed for parents, educational support personnel and interested members of the community to gain introductory level and practical knowledge for supporting children and adults diagnosed with Autism.
“ASD is considered the fastest-growing developmental disorder in the country,” said Michelle Rowe, Ph.D., executive director of the Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support. “Saint Joseph’s University is committed to empowering the families, caregivers and educators who are on the frontlines.”
Students are required to complete six courses to obtain the certificate: Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders, Applied Behavior Analysis and Autism Treatment, Social Skills Development in Autism, Resources and Advocacy for Autism, Adult and Transition Services in Autism and Seminar in Autism Spectrum Disorders.
“Our Jesuit mission of fostering men and women for others, our long history of providing quality education for the adult professional, and the valuable resources available in the Kinney Center make SJU an ideal place to earn a certificate in Autism studies,” added Judy Gallagher, M.Ed., associate dean of the College of Professional and Liberal Studies.
