SJU Celebrates 40th Earth Day with Green Activities

What: Saint Joseph’s University will pick up the ‘green’ gauntlet and encourage sustainable lifestyle practices throughout the week to observe the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.
When: Monday, April 19 – Saturday, April 24
Where: Saint Joseph’s University 5600 City Avenue Philadelphia, Pa. 19131
Highlights: SJU students, faculty and staff will join with school children from Samuel Gompers Elementary School and the Overbrook Civic Association to plant flowers and trees; participate in the panel discussion “Creating a Greener World: Learning from Philadelphia High School Students”; dive into dumpsters to retrieve recyclable items; learn about sustainable transportation; donate old sneakers to be recycled into athletic surfaces. Who: Events are sponsored by two student organizations—G.R.E.E.N. C.O.W. (Get Ready for Environmental Education Now Conserve Our Wildlife) and the SJU Sustainability Club—and the recycling and travel working groups of the University Sustainability Committee. Wednesday, April 21
- Documentary produced by SJU community members, “Sustainability – A New Consumer Movement,” Forum Theatre, Campion Student Center, 8 p.m.
Thursday, April 22 – Earth Day
- Sustainable travel vendors: Zipcar, SEPTA (hybrid bus), GVF Transportation, biking information.
- Dumpster Dive, Sourin parking lot, 10:30 a.m.
- Shred Event, Sourin parking lot, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
- Sneaker collection, Campion Student Center (walkway), 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m.
- Earth Fest Concert, Gest Lawn, 6 p.m.
Saturday, April 24
- Tree planting with Overbrook Civic Association, 66th and Lebanon, 9:30 a.m.
