Saint Joseph’s University will hold its first ever “Wellness Week” Sept. 24 through Sept. 29 creating a University-wide effort to raise awareness of physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. The Wellness Week Committee, made up of members from 14 different academic departments, has called for both student and faculty involvement to create a campus-wide collaboration.
“The Wellness, Alcohol & Drug Education (WADE) program already does amazing things related to alcohol and drugs and I wanted to spend more time focusing on other wellness issues,” says Katie Bean, assistant director of WADE and Student Outreach and Support. “Many other departments across campus share in wellness promotion, especially given our mission and focus on cura personalis.”
Week-long wellness events include free fitness classes — zumba, yoga, piloxing and more — at O’Pake Fitness Center, programs on healthy conflict, bullying and sleep, Taize meditation in the Chapel on Thursday and “Eat This Not That” in Campion Cafeteria on Friday.
The main event of the week is the Wellness Fair, taking place during free period on Tuesday in the Fishbowl. Bean says, “We came up with the idea for the Wellness Fair because we wanted to promote all of the resources that already exist to help students, faculty, staff and alumni with their holistic health.”
In addition to free, freshly made smoothies and a “create your own trail mix” station, there will be tables from local vendors raffling off prizes that appeal to students and alumni alike. Other tables are run by members of the University themselves; CAPS and the Student Health Center are participating, as well as student groups such as Active Minds, Peer Educators, and SUB.
Anyone who attends will receive a raffle ticket and can receive more tickets by participating in any of the activity tables. Raffle prizes include: a 90-day gym membership with tanning and a t-shirt from Planet Fitness; a $35 gift certificate to the Yoga Gardens; a free team sign up for any Philly sport and social league; and a gift basket donated by one of the departments on campus.
