PHILADELPHIA (June 30, 2008) –Three students studying risk management and insurance at Saint Joseph's University were awarded scholarships from the Insurance Society of Philadelphia (ISP).
The Society, with over 200 member organizations, aims to educate and promote professionalism in the insurance industry. Scholarship recipients are selected based on the application materials including an essay, grades and professor recommendations.
Christina Ayoub '11, Tara Humma '10 and Vi-Zanne Ho '11 were each awarded a $3,500 scholarship toward their education. They were presented with their awards during the Society's Education Awards Banquet on Wednesday, June 25, 2008.
"We are very pleased to be able to award these outstanding Saint Joseph's students," said ISP President Terry Macko.
Ayoub, who plans to work as an actuary in the insurance industry after graduation, said she is looking forward to a career in an industry that provides peace of mind to individuals. "The most interesting aspect about the insurance industry [to me] is its aim to minimize both financial and emotional losses which result from undesirable and unpredictable events," she said.
Insurance piqued the interest of Humma because of how multi-faceted it can be. "I am constantly learning new things," she remarked.
Ho credits her classmates and the risk management and insurance professors at Saint Joseph's for her academic success. She believes the insurance industry will provide her with the challenges and opportunities she is seeking to develop and accomplish her goals.
This is the first time the Society has recognized Saint Joseph's students with scholarships. "To be recognized by the society is a testament to the University's emergence in the insurance education," said Samuel Cupp, the Brian Duperreault/ACE Limited Executive in Residence for Risk Management and Insurance at Saint Joseph's.
The risk management and insurance program in the Erivan K. Haub School of Business was established in 2003. To support the program, the University established the Academy for Risk Management and Insurance in 2006 to offer scholarship aid, recruiting, internships/cooperative educations, counseling and placement to students. Chaired by alumnus James J. Maguire '58, chairman and founder of Philadelphia Insurance Companies, the Academy provides students and executives with opportunities few universities in the area offer.
