PHILADELPHIA (March 18, 2009) – The psychology department at Saint Joseph’s University will host the 2009 Ralph I. Hyatt Lecture, presented by Sheldon Cohen, Ph.D., the Robert E. Doherty Professor of Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University. Cohen is a world-renowned psychologist who studies the relationship among stress, emotions, social support, and illness.
His lecture, “Stress, Social Support, Social Status and Susceptibility to infection: The Common Cold Project,” will be held in the Wolfington Teletorium of Mandeville Hall, on Tuesday, March 24, at 11:30 a.m.
Cohen studies how stress, emotion, and social support impact immunity and susceptibility to infectious disease. For more than two decades, his Common Cold Project has been at the forefront of research into the relationship between stress and health. His classic work on the role of psychosocial factors in susceptibility to the common cold has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Cohen has received numerous awards for his work, including from APA Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions to Psychology, the APS James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award for Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to Research in Applied Psychology, the NIMH Research Scientist Development, and Senior Scientist Awards and was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
