SJU Food Marketing Department Welcomes New Chair

PHILADELPHIA (July 2, 2008) – An international food expert known for his numerous contributions to the field has been named chair of food marketing at Saint Joseph’s University.

StantonThe sole food marketing program in Pennsylvania, Saint Joseph’s has one of six recognized food industry curriculums in the United States. As chair of this unique program, John Stanton, Ph.D., will provide leadership and oversight to faculty and students.  Stanton had previously served the University as a professor of food marketing.

“John has been a tremendous asset to the business school for the past 25 years. I’ve been consistently impressed with his work inside the classroom and out. I’m confident that he will build on the success of the food marketing department and take it to the next level,” said Erivan K. Haub School of Business Dean Joseph DiAngelo, Ed.D.

For Stanton, food has always been a passion. “I was very interested in food as a young man and was trained to cook by a neighbor,” he said. “And for the past 35 years, I’ve cooked 100 percent of the meals in my home.”

For the same length of time, Stanton has used his passion for food to fuel a varied and successful career in both academia and industry. Stanton's ability to couple his knowledge and expertise with enthusiastic presentations has earned him numerous speaking engagements and recognition in more than 20 publications internationally.

"Food marketing is simple," he explained. "It is making what people want to eat -- not making people eat what you want to make."

Stanton has applied this concept to the consulting services he provides to food companies including the Campbell Soup Company, Procter & Gamble, Frito Lay, and Kellogg. The author of nine books, Stanton’s recent work, Making Niche Marketing Work, was published in five languages and was the first selection for BusinessWeek’s book club. Stanton is also editor of the Journal of Food Products Marketing, and serves as contributing editor for Food Processing magazine.
