Saint Joseph's Names New University Counsel

PHILADELPHIA (April 17, 2008) - Following a national search, Saint Joseph's University President Timothy R, Lannon, S.J., has announced that Marianne Schimelfenig has been named the University's General Counsel.

CounselSchimelfenig comes to Saint Joseph's after serving as General Counsel for Saint Mary's College of California for nearly 10 years.  Prior to that, Schimelfenig was in the trial department of the Office of General Counsel for the Regents of the University of California.  Earlier in her career, she was a partner with the Portland, Ore., firm of Spears, Lubersky, Bledsoe, Anderson, Young & Hilliard.

A native Pennsylvanian, Schimelfenig earned her bachelor's degree in history from Marywood University in Scranton, a master's in American history from the University of Scranton, and her J.D. from Lewis & Clark Northwestern School of Law in Portland, Ore.  She has been actively involved with the National Association of College and University Lawyers (NACUA) for 15 years and recently was elected to serve as 2nd vice president, a position that puts her on the leadership ladder to the presidency of NACUA.  She is an active member of the bar in California, New York, the District of Columbia and Oregon.

"With her impressive professional background in higher education settings as well as her experience as a litigator and her own experience of the unique benefits of a Jesuit education, Saint Joseph's is indeed fortunate to have Marianne assume the position of General Counsel," Fr. Lannon said.

Background: Founded by the Society of Jesus in 1851, Saint Joseph's University advances the professional and personal ambitions of men and women by providing a demanding, yet supportive, educational experience. One of only 142 schools with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter and AACSB business school accreditation, Saint Joseph's is home to 4,150 full-time undergraduates and 2,700 graduate, part-time and doctoral students. Steeped in the 450-year Jesuit tradition of scholarship and service, Saint Joseph's was recently named to the 2006 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for General Community Service. The University strives to be recognized as the preeminent Catholic comprehensive university in the Northeast.
