Attracting Outstanding Educators to SJU

Great universities are built on the talent, experience and dedication of their faculty. Generous giving by our alumni, families and community enables Saint Joseph’s to continue developing a larger, more renowned faculty, so we can provide exceptional instruction and inspiration for our students.  Our accomplished faculty and high academic achievement are raising the academic profile of our University.

New Faculty

The ability to expand the University’s facilities and infrastructure through the addition of the Maguire Campus has led to the hiring of more than 52 new faculty in the past three years. The new faculty and expanded curriculum already are having a profound impact in the Arts and Sciences, the Haub School of Business and across the academic spectrum through the expansion of the writing center.

New faculty members include a cadre of accomplished and prolific authors who have joined the English department. April Lindner, Ph.D., Professor; Melissa Goldthwaite, Ph.D., Professor; Tenyata Darlington, M.F.A, Associate Professor; and R. Thomas Coyne, M.F.A., Assistant Professor bring a wide range of talents and perspective to SJU’s writing community.

Other faculty-recruitment achievements include the appointment of John Braverman, S.J., Ph.D., as Assistant Professor of biology in 2010. His expertise and research are centered on bioinformatics, genome science and evolutionary biology. Recruited by many top-tier universities, Fr. Braverman chose Saint Joseph’s because he liked the University’s deep commitment to undergraduate education.

Endowed Chairs

Endowed faculty positions provide extraordinary resources for establishing a more vibrant intellectual community and are among the highest honors that a scholar can receive. Through increased funding and successful searches, the University will be in a position to fill all its endowed faculty chairs by Fall 2012. To reach that goal, SJU filled three endowed chair positions in 2011:

  • John McCall, Ph.D., director of the Pedro Arrupe Center for Business Ethics and professor of management and philosophy, is the newly appointed John McShain Chair in Ethics at Saint Joseph’s University.
  • Professor-Designate of Philosophy, Joseph J. Godfrey, S.J. (pictured above), is the inaugural holder of the Reverend Joseph S. Hogan, S.J. ’03 Endowed Chair in Philosophy.
  • Jean L. Heck, Ph.D., is the inaugural holder of the Brian Duperreault Chair for Risk Management and Insurance in the Erivan K. Haub School of Business.

“The addition of such high-caliber scholars poises Saint Joseph’s to leverage the strength of our faculty to promote further growth and reach even higher academic distinction,” said Brice Wachterhauser, Ph.D., University Provost.
