Celebrating a Legacy

On April 16, 2010, Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., gathered in the President’s Lounge with University officials, family and close friends for the unveiling of his official portrait. Following tradition, his portrait joined those of the 25 presidents who have come before him.

The milestone signaled the conclusion of his eight years as president of Saint Joseph’s University. During his tenure, Fr. Lannon led many very significant and highly successful University initiatives, including:

  • presiding over the most successful campaign in University history, With Faith and Strength to Dare: The Campaign for Saint Joseph’s University, which has raised more than $152 million.
  • signing the agreement to purchase the 38 acres now known as Maguire Campus, securing the greatest physical expansion of the University since the 1920s.
  • launching anumber of academic centers of excellence, including thePedro Arrupe Center for Business Ethicsand theCatholic Bioethics Institute.
  • enhancing academic opportunities with newly endowed student scholarships and a new undergraduate curriculum.

Now that Fr. Lannon has answered a calling to return to Creighton University, his alma mater, what will the Saint Joseph’s community remember most about our 26th president?

According to the reflections people shared during the Campaign Celebration Gala & Farewell to University President Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., his legacy will reach far beyond the major events of his presidency. Most likely, Fr. Lannon will be remembered for his ability to connect with nearly everyone and to inspire each individual toward achieving magis at a higher level.

A portrait hangs in the President’s Lounge to commemorate Father Lannon’s legacy as the 26th president of Saint Joseph’s University. His true legacy is carried in the hearts of the myriad people who have been uplifted by the love and service freely given by a man who truly lives for others.
