Research Interests/Objectives:
I take an
integrative approach (fossil and extant) to the study of
the origin and relationships of chondrichthyan fishes, and of the
origin and evolution of early vertebrates. Emphasis is placed on the
functional and developmental morphology of the cranium, suspensorium,
mineralized tissues and the immune and vascular systems. Studies in
progress involve ontogenetic and phylogenetic differentiation of the
cranium, the development and mineralization of skeletal tissues, the
description of new Bear Gulch fishes, and cladistic analyses of the
Paleozoic fishes.
