Faculty Roles in Living Learning

Living Learning at Saint Joseph's University promotes a fundamental educational philosophy: When faculty and students are accessible to one another, meaningful conversations that contribute to students’ academic and personal formation can take place. There is dialogue, mutual understanding, relationship-building and, most importantly, learning about and from one another. 

Faculty contribute to Living Learning--and to student learning outside of the classroom: 1) as presenters for General and Academic Interest Housing programs; 2) as collaborators in linked courses for the Freshman Learning Community; and 3) as Faculty and as Jesuits in Residence.

Faculty Presenters

As program presenters, faculty draw upon their academic and personal backgrounds to offer Living Learning programs that are of interest and of relevance to students. A detailed roster of these programs can be found under the Programs tab on the Living Learning web site. As illustrations, faculty have offered events on topics such as: Students, Landlords and the Law; Sabermetrics: The Mathematics of Baseball Science; Hooking Up on Campus; and Everything You’ve Always Wanted To Know About The Jesuits But Were Afraid To Ask.

Freshman Learning Community Faculty

Faculty from the English and History Departments teach students who reside in the Freshman Learning Community through linked sections of Craft of Language (English) and Western Civilization (History). Through this initiative, students who live together also are enrolled in the same English and History courses for the first semester of the freshman year. This arrangement has been met with great enthusiasm among faculty and students alike, who report an enhanced classroom community thanks to students’ relationships outside of class. This community has led to study groups, conversations about class topics and the formation of friendships that have contributed to an active, positive and inclusive in-class experience. 

Faculty and Jesuits in Residence

Several faculty and Jesuits reside in the residence halls with students, either as a general presence to assist with students’ academic and personal formation or to enhance an Academic Housing Option. For 2005-2006, the following faculty and Jesuits live with students in the residence halls:
