What are General Living Learning programs and how will I know about them?

General Living Learning programs have been offered to resident students on and off campus since 1999.  Each program examines a topic from the presenter's academic area or personal interest and relates it to students' interests and needs. Because students have different needs and interests, general Living Learning programs are just that: general.  No topic or theme dominates a semester of programming. Topics may emerge quickly to bring understanding to a current event or topics may address long-standing issues.

Past general Living Learning programs have addressed sleep, diversity, marriage, dating, nutrition, cooking instruction, the mathematics of card tricks, readings of poetry and creative writing, credit card management, reflection on September 11 terrorist attacks, prayer, and legal issues affecting students and landlords. Off-campus trips likewise fall under the auspices of general Living Learning programs and have included excursions to the Philadelphia Academy of Music, the Forrest Theatre, the Mutter Museum at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Students are encouraged to attend any Living Learning program independently. The Living Learning web site's tab "This Week in Living Learning" notes upcoming events. Flyers for Living Learning programs are posted in the residence halls a few days prior to each event. Typically, Resident Assistants assess the interest of their halls in a given program; the Resident Assistants and students then attend various programs together.

General Living Learning programs typically are free of cost to students—including the off-campus events noted above.  The desire is to continue this in the future; however, when there is any cost, it will be nominal and it will be advertised with the event’s description.

Future Living Learning programs will be developed based upon student feedback of current programs.  Students who attend Living Learning programs occasionally will be asked to assess the program. Students are encouraged to complete the assessment with the knowledge that their responses will not be linked to their identities and that their input will guide the future of Living Learning.
