Residence Hall & Campus Apartment Features

  • All residence halls are equipped with laundry rooms, vending machines, study rooms and lounge areas.
  • Individual rooms are furnished with a bed, desk, dresser and closet space for each occupant.
  • The apartments are furnished with living room and kitchen furniture as well as bedroom furniture.
  • On the ground floor of LaFarge there is a recently renovated study lounge which has been used by many students during final exams and received rave reviews.  As with the study areas in McShain, Sourin, and the Campus Houses, this  study room in LaFarge is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Fitness Centers are located in Sourin, LaFarge, and Overbrook Hall. The fitness centers are well equipped with Life Fitness exercise equipment, allowing for both cardiovascular and strength fitness training.
  • A new fitness center is under construction in Merion Gardens and should be completed by early December 2007.
  • In an effort to provide additional activities on campus, the lounge in LaFarge and McShain Solarium contain recreation equipment. Each is equipped with a pool and ping pong table. Several sets of tables and chairs in these areas add to the social atmosphere.

  • Student mailboxes are located in the lounge areas of Overbrook, McShain, LaFarge, and Sourin residence centers, and all four of the Campus Apartment buildings. Students living in the Central Campus Houses go to Sourin for their mail, and students living in the Lapsley Lane Houses (Merion Campus) have mailboxes behind their individual houses.
  • To increase the security of the residence centers, Merion Gardens, Wynnewood Apartments, Ashwood, Lancaster Courts and The City Avenue Residence Center are staffed twenty-four hours a day by desk attendants who monitor the individuals who enter the buildings. Any person who is not a resident of a particular facility must be registered as a guest by a host student from that facility.

About our mattresses
The residence halls have standard twin size mattresses measuring 36" by 76". Residence Life has purchased a very limited supply of "extra-long" or 36" by 80" mattresses, which are available upon request and based on need. Students who would like to request and extra-long mattress should email reslife_housing@sju.edu.  Please include the following information with your request:

  • full name
  • student ID number
  • reason for the request

All requests must be in writing for record keeping purposes. Decisions regarding the placement of extra-long mattresses will be made by mid-August. All students who request an extra-long mattress will receive an email in August prior to move in, via their University email account, informing them of the status of their request.

The Residence Life Staff is excited about these improvements in the residence halls and hope that our students will take advantage of the opportunities they offer. We believe that the study areas and computers, as well as the stress relieving recreation equipment all contribute to the education resident students receive at Saint Joseph's University.
