Residence Hall Fitness Centers

The Office of Residence Life provides three fitness centers for use by resident students. These centers, located in Sourin, LaFarge, Overbrook, and Merion Gardens fulfill the physical wellness objective of Living Learning, complementing the intellectual and spiritual opportunities Living Learning provides for resident students.

The question-and-answer series below addresses the most common information students want to know about the fitness centers.  Any question that is not answered below can be directed to the Office of Residence Life Reslife_Feedback@sju.edu or at 610-660-1060.

What equipment is available in the Sourin, LaFarge, Overbrook, and Merion Gardens fitness centers?
The fitness centers all feature a combination of cardiovascular equipment (treadmills, elliptical/cross trainers and stationary bikes) and strength equipment to allow full-body strength training. The Life Fitness brand equipment is the same as one would find in a top-tier health club. No free weights are available.

Who can use the Sourin, LaFarge, Overbrook, and Merion Gardens fitness centers?
Sourin, LaFarge and Overbrook Halls feature fitness centers that are available to any resident student (a student who resides in a University residence hall).  A roster of resident students will be kept at the front desk of each facility that houses a fitness center.

What if I am a resident student and my name is not on the list?

If for any reason a resident student's name is not on the resident student list, please contact the Office of Residence Life Reslife_Feedback@sju.edu or at 610-660-1060.  Leave a name, student ID number and return contact telephone number (please speak this information clearly).  This can be done from a lobby phone from any of the buildings in which a fitness center is located.  Once this call has been placed, the student will have a one-time grace period to use the fitness center he or she came to use.  However, the student should not return to use any fitness center until the Director of Living Learning has returned the student's call to verify access to the fitness centers.

How do I gain access to a fitness center if I am approved to use it?
Students who live in the buildings where the fitness centers are located have Saint Joseph's identification cards that are pre-programmed to allow them swipe access into the fitness centers. Students who do not live in the buildings where the fitness centers are located, but who reside in a residence hall that is approved to use the fitness center, must exchange their Saint Joseph's identification card for a fitness center pass at the lobby security desk.

When are the fitness centers open?
The fitness centers' swipe access is active from 6:00 a.m. to midnight seven days a week.

Is there any security or monitoring of the fitness centers?
Each fitness center is monitored by a security camera. Activity in the fitness centers can be observed on screens at the security desk in which each center is located and at Security headquarters in Barbelin.

Who maintains the fitness centers? Who is the contact if something is broken?
The Residence Life Office/Living Learning maintains the fitness centers. This includes regular visual inspections of the facilities, the cleaning of the equipment, repair and scheduled maintenance. Any problems or repair requests can be directed to the Office of Residence Life Reslife_Feedback@sju.edu or at 610-660-1060.

What are the Gym Wipes provided in the fitness centers?
Gym Wipes are antibacterial wipes that students can use to wipe down equipment before or after using equipment. As a courtesy to others, students are asked to wipe down equipment after using it.

What are the policies for using the fitness centers?
By using the Sourin, LaFarge or Overbrook fitness centers, students agree that they have read and will follow all safety notices and fitness policies. The information posted below is also posted at each fitness center. Saint Joseph's University is not liable for any injury students may incur while using the fitness centers. Use of the fitness centers is at students' own risk.
