Emergency Preparedness

Evacuation Procedures

The purpose of an evacuation is to ensure that all occupants of a building are safely and swiftly evacuated for fires, emergencies and drills.  In most cases, a fire alarm will sound indicating that an evacuation is necessary.  Building evacuations may also be initiated by public address systems, emergency text messaging, and word of mouth.  Never assume that you are hearing a false alarm – always evacuate in a quick and orderly fashion and follow the directions of evacuation staff.

When evacuation procedures are initiated, take only limited personal possessions with you as time may be of the essence.  Take a class roster or personnel listing in order to account for people once you arrive at the evacuation assembly point.  When evacuating, do not use elevators; take the stairs and keep to the right in order to allow emergency personnel to ascend the stairs without delay.  If trapped in an elevator, use the emergency phone inside the elevator to communicate with Public Safety personnel.  Stay calm and await help.  Contact Public Safety if an evacuee requires special assistance.

Upon evacuation of the building, proceed directly to the evacuation assembly point for your building location.  Evacuation maps are available on the Emergency Preparedness website.   Upon arrival at the evacuation assembly point, maintain accountability for any subordinates or students you may have and listen for further instructions given by Public Safety personnel.   Remain at the evacuation assembly point until Public Safety personnel or emergency responders give the “all clear.”
