Emergency Preparedness
The basic definition of shelter-in-place means to stay inside the building you are in to avoid adverse conditions in the outside environment. Precautions are taken to isolate individuals from airborne contaminants and may include turning off heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and closing all windows and doors. Shelter-in-place can be used for incidents where there is little or no time to react and it would be more dangerous to evacuate the building. The notification to shelter-in-place may be disseminated in a number of different ways to include public address systems, emergency text messaging, and word of mouth. Once the notification and instructions have been given, individuals are expected to gather personal belongings and emergency supplies and seek an interior room above ground level within their building. If individuals are outside and the notification to shelter-in-place has been given, they should proceed as quickly as possible to the closest building. Once inside an interior room, shut and lock all windows and close exterior doors. Seal gaps and vents with wet towels, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, or duct tape, if available. Make a list of everyone sheltering and call it in to Public Safety along with the shelter location. A shelter-in-place situation may last for several hours, so make yourself as comfortable as possible and look after each other. You will receive notification once it is safe to exit the building.
